Meteor Pre Pay Micro SIM for Tablets. Is that the same SIM to order for a MiFi device?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭editorsean

I would suggest ordering the SIM from their prepay broadband page (link).

Their Tablet SIM page shows the old plans, so I'm not sure whether they would send out one with the old plan or if the old prepay data SIM plans have been converted to the new plans.

Their mobile broadband SIM I received with the dongle splits up into micro and nano size as shown below:

    2L0rgpS.jpg

These snap together again, so the SIM can be easily swapped between a tablet and MiFi.

For the connection settings, the username and password fields remain blank and the APN name is: broadband.mymeteor.ie

Interestingly my broadband SIM came with a quick start guide mentioning how to set it up in a phone. Indeed it works in my phone also. ;)

The SIM only link on on the broadband page links to the Tablet SIM. On chat to support but I might as well be talking to myself. I might just call into a Meteor store.

Just order the tablet sim, it's all the same i.e a prepay broadband sim.

There is no "plan", you get the sim, put it in your device, top up and buy a "pass" of your choice.

Check the APN settings before turning on data in your phone / modem.

I got a broadband SiM (says "Meteor Prepay MBB" on the barcode sticker), when I put it in the phone the APN was set as a phone data APN. If you use this APN you will be charged flat rate phone data daily rate of 1.99 up to 100MB and 99c per MB after that. I had a Meteor phone SIM in the phone and it may have saved that APN and reused it for some reason.

Anyway make sure the APN is set as
    broadband.mymeteor.ie
    as per editorsean's post above.

The first time you connect you'll be given the option of buying a pass or paying 2c per MB.

That's a good point. I got stung with a similar mistake with Vodafone where I tried using a prepay phone SIM in a router to run a speed test. I don't get a 3G signal inside my house, whereas I get a full 3G signal with the external antenna attached to the router, so wanted to see how Vodafone compared with Three and Meteor at the time. Bad mistake - The router automatically set the APN to hs.vodafone.ie (instead of live.vodafone.com), gobbling up my credit at the out of bundle rate instead of using the data bundle I had at the time.

My phone chose the correct APN with the Meteor MBB SIM. Interesting the selection of APNs available on the left. The right imaged shows the landing screen I got just before I chose the 50GB option:

    PshXRen.pngLycdfRB.png

On the MyMeteor website, it gave the option of two roaming bundles - 1GB for €15 for Europe and 200MB for €20 for the USA from what I recall. At those rates, it would be cheaper to pick up a Three UK data SIM and use it for roaming.

This SIM will not dial out (I tried a few numbers, including 1741), so it needs to be used in a dual-SIM phone where the other SIM is configured for calls.

i have just got a sim and set up the 50GB, is there any way of checking how much data is remaining on the meteor website?

Register on Meteor web page, you can check your data usage, seems to update daily.

Can anyone recommend a router for use with an IP cam with this SIM?

Preferably one that has DNS IP forwarding so you can login via a webpage?

Unfortunately Meteor broadband does not offer a public IP address even on their bill pay plans. I tried both both the 'isp.mymeteor.ie' and 'broadband.mymeteor.ie' APNs, but but got a private 100.x.x.x IP on both, which can't accept incoming connections.

Three is the only mobile broadband provider I'm aware of that still offers a public IP address. If you can leave a PC running connected to the same network, you can use TeamViewer to make a remote desktop connection to the computer and then view the cameras from the internal IP address webpage. Like Skype, TeamViewer does not require port forwarding or DDNS to work and is free for personal use. If you haven't bought the IP cameras yet, it would be worth checking if any upload footage to a server - That would provide remote camera access without port forwarding, however, most of these companies charge a subscription for hosting the recordings (e.g. Nest Cam).

Edit: I forgot to mention that remote recording IP cameras use a substantial amount of data (60+GB/month for 720p on Nest Cam), so this suggestion would only work for cameras that only upload when motion is detected (e.g. battery operated IP cameras) or where 24/7 recording is not enabled, such as the Nest Cam without a Nest Aware subscription.

According to Meteor, you can buy another once 30 days has passed since the previous purchase. Then again, I don't actually think their system would stop one purchasing another bundle within the 30 days either as I remember hearing someone who used to buy multiple bundles each month back when Meteor's largest prepay bundle was 7.5GB.

    Cheers hopefully can,

I have been getting great speeds in a remote area no problem streaming which is a first for this area, if i can can get 100GB per month for 60 euro at these speeds ill be delighted.

So if you signed up for this plus the €9 Lycamobile talk and text it looks like about €14 total per month for 450mins Calls, 450 Texts + 8GB Data. Fantastic. This would surely suit 90% of people?

Edited - Obviously it would suit 90% of people who had a dual SIM phone!!!

If you pay an extra euro to Lyca, you can get:

    €15
    /30 Days
    Ireland Plus

    Unlimited National Mins

    Unlimited National Text

    30 GB National Data

and only need the one sim.

€30 for 50GB/180 days is really good though. I'm just thinking what good uses it would have, maybe GPS tracking for vehicles or something.

Does anyone know how it works when roaming?

But lycas Internet would be slow in comparison. I don't think they have 4g yet.

    Lyca does not offer 4G

The main problem with Luca apart from lack of 4G is the inability to tether. I tether a tablet all the time for work and lyca, for some strange reason, won't allow this.

It is €15 for 1GB of data in Europe or €20 for 200MB of data in the USA and lasts 30 days. The roaming bundles are the same with Meteor's prepay phone SIMs.

For additional roaming data or other countries, I would suggest getting a Three UK data SIM (available on Amazon). They have a 3GB data SIM for £10 (link), which works in 42 countries in addition to the UK.

Thanks a lot for all that! Some good options to choose from there :)

would the huawei e3531 stick or the e5330 hotspot be faster if in the same area? will stick work with a tablet if using an adapter

Anyone know if the speeds are throttled when roaming? It does also say only for holidays and not 'extended periods', I'm living in Spain, would they cut me off after a period?

Meteor has increased its prepay Mobile Broadband plans as follows, both with 4G access where available:
    • 30 Day Pass - 15GB for €19.99
    • 180 Day Pass - 50GB for €30

The 180 day pass will certainly be useful for light/occasional users such as motorhomes/caravans, as a cheap extension to those approaching their Bill-pay mobile broadband allowance or even as a backup connection for those experiencing periodic outages / issues with their main broadband service.

I have not heard any promotion about these prepay mobile broadband plans, unlike Meteor's "More than you can eat data" phone plan ads. The 180 day pass works out at €5 per month with an average of 8GB/month (6 x 8GB = 48GB), a bargain compared to Vodafone (any mobile broadband plan) and Three's official prepay and bill pay broadband 1-3 plans, assuming one has decent Meteor 3G/4G coverage.

    Further information on Meteor's website.
    Sounds like good value

Has anyone who has directly swapped a Meteor phone SIM with a broadband SIM (in a handset) noticed whether phone SIMs have data connection priority over broadband? Or is it the same for both?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 798 ✭✭✭editorsean

During the two week transitional period where I bought the 50GB bundle on the broadband SIM while the phone SIM still had an active data bundle, I did not notice any difference in the performance switching back and forth between the SIMs for data. In areas where I faced network congestion (e.g. Letterkenny), the speed tests were roughly equal with both SIMs.

I also experience the issue I posted here where when the phone switches from Edge to 3G, my speed intermittently gets capped around 300kbps until I cycle aeroplane mode. As a workaround, I put the broadband SIM in WCDMA-only mode. This also helps with streaming music as the phone never switches to Edge in areas of patchy coverage. This doesn't affect calls/texts as the other slot with the phone SIM only operates in 2G GSM mode. If I need faster data in an area with 4G, I can change the network mode back to auto 2G/3G/4G.

This plan seems like a great value - have broaband at home, but the signal drops periodically.

I have a few (simplistic) questions if someone wouldn't mind answering. :o

I'm thinking of getting the Huawei hotspot from the Meteor website.... does this come with the sim or do I need to buy the sim from this link...

I want to use this for a few devices...iPad, phone, laptop, so guessing that a hotspot is more appropriate for my needs rather than a dongle.......?

I note from the meteor website, for to avail of the 180 Day Pass you need to Text "180 Day" to 50104.... so how do I actually pay for the pass? Credit card? Phone credit?

And when it states 180 days.... if I still have some of the 50gb unused after the 180 days have passed, do I lose out on that data....? Or if I top it up again, does the data which remained get added to my new balance? Do I have to use the 50gb in the 180 day time frame..... (I doubt I'll have a problem with using all the data up, but just checking all the same :pac:)

Apologies in advance for the ridiculous questions.... :o

When I ordered the E3372 dongle, it came with the broadband SIM. The SIM is modular in that it can be broken down to nano and micro size and the pieces snap together again back to the original SIM size. So even if you get a dongle/hotspot, you can use the SIM in any other SIM unlocked device.

Before getting the dongle, see if you can get an unusued Android phone, particularly if 4G enabled. Just do a factory reset on the phone (so old apps, syncing, etc. don't eat your data) and you can use that as your Wi-Fi hotspot by enabling Hotspot/Tethering on the phone. In this case, you would just need to get the Broadband SIM.

A better option if you can afford it would be to get an unlocked desktop 3G/4G router such as a used Huawei B593s-22 off eBay. This will provide better Wi-Fi coverage throughout your house and network ports. The desktop routers have better internal antennas than most dongles and hotspot devices, so will generally give better performance, particularly if you are an a weak signal area.

Topping up is similar with a Meteor prepay phone. I usually top-up by sending a top-up to the Meteor broadband # from my online banking. If you buy a Meteor top-up in the shop, I think the method is similar to topping up a prepay phone, i.e. send the voucher number as an SMS to 50103.

When you access the web for the first time with the SIM, it will bring up a landing page similar to joining a public Wi-Fi network giving the choice to buy a 15GB or 50GB plan.

If your data bundle runs out, it brings up the landing page with the options to buy another bundle. Unused data is not carried forward. Then again, if you plan using it with a laptop, iPad, etc. chances are you'll have used up the 50GB long before the expiry date. ;)

    Which they dont allow.

As long as your device has a wifi hotspot I don't think it matters. 3 don't 'allow' tethering or using your phone as a wifi hotspot but there is no means of detecting this and I use it all the time.
