The mannequin head came today! Luckily it already has a hole on the base for use with the clamp.

Some day I hope to have a proper VR headset for it to mind!

The only con is that if you scrape it with your finger a tiny layer of black residue comes off from the paint.

It's basically a white one paint painted black so the white ones don't have this issue.

Also the clamp is essential as the weight of the headset will make the head tip over as it's so light.

Still though, probably the coolest and best stand you can get for under 10 quid.

Funnily enough just as I was about to post it in the Virtual Reality Facebook group , some guy posted a more elegant solution just before me!

It's called the Cybust and can stand on your desk without a clamp that costs €80.

First impressions using CV1 is that the screen quality is a very decent improvement on DK2. The Godray's are brutal in some circumstances but for actual gaming, they're really not so noticable at all.

Biggest gripe compared to DK2 is the sheer lack of content available - sure, there are a few games, but I was quite spoiled by the huge amount of tech demo's and experiences available for the DK2 - 90% of which now don't work on CV1, and most dev's won't update them either. That's disappointing as the DK2 had some amazing experiences. Some free apps on DK2 are now paid apps on CV1 (in fact one or two of the DK2 versions work on CV1 using a wrapper and they're pretty much the same thing).

Does anyone use VorpX? Thinking about giving that a go to use some of my existing games, I hear it works pretty well in Fallout 4 and Skyrim.

Overall I'm a bit meh about it. There seems to be more fun to be had with the Vive at the moment.

I have VorpX and for me it wasn't worth it. Vireio perception worked better for me on Skyrim.

Whats the Skyrim VR experience actually like? Would yo play a full RPG like that in VR?

One of the best RPGs I played with it was actually ESO.

Its not GREAT, as you have to turn shadows off but you do feel the scale of the place and a decent 3d effect. A session running around Skyrim leaves you wrecked :pac:

Same as that, vorp x was just a pain in the hole. Never got anything to look decent. Viereio worked well with Skyrim on DK1, but not so much when it was updated. Too many hoops to jump through with those injector programs.

Don't you know if they'll have some sales or if the price is gonna get lower?

    £549 on amazon

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,667 ✭✭✭Darwin

£562 when Irish VAT added, at current retail exchange rates works out around €670 delivered. Occulus are doing free worldwide shipping until end of August, but still makes amazon about €30 cheaper (unless sterling takes another nose dive in the next few weeks!).

Oculus showed off a wireless headset prototype at OculusConnect 3 today:

    https://www.engadget.com/2016/10/06/oculus-next-headset-is-a-cross-between-the-rift-and-gear-vr/

Its designed to "bridge the gap between the high end Oculus Rift and the portable Gear VR."

Still no wireless headset that will fully use the performance of a gaming PC though.

We'll have to wait for a new wireless technology I guess, bluetooth on steroids.

I think the more interesting announcement was the ASW, reducing the min spec to include my PC :)
Originally was waiting till next year to update everything in PC and then Vive/Rift next year, but could get the Rift sooner than later now

I missed that!ASW seems pretty much like how Playstation are driving the displays in PSVR.

I never fully understood how PS VR does it with reprojection, I thought that was more simple like Time Warp but not asynchronous so ASW along with ATW should be smoother etc.
Either way its good overall I think, opens VR to a bigger audience, but I suppose there is the fear of Devs targeting 45fps now rather than 90 and relying on the ASW etc.

Also with he GBP currency more in our favour, may be nearly €100 cheaper to order for UK

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,992 ✭✭✭Doge

Looks like ASW can be enabled already on the Rift via editing the windows registry:

Is it just controllers or is there extra hardware needed? I would have thought the camera wouldn't be enough on it's own for room scale.

you get 1 extra camera along with a longer USB cable and if you want proper room scale they'll be selling an extra one at the end of October for $79 so probably 79euro, expensive roomscale vs Vive but the controllers do look better in honesty

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,806 ✭✭✭Calibos

To clarify, you get the free usb extender cable with the separately purchased third camera but don't as far as we know get one with the camera that comes with Touch.

    Apology Incoming!!

I was looking for an old post of mine that I thought I posted here about 9 months ago about our theories about a 3 camera triangle config for Touch and I ended up reading through the last 20 pages or so.

I'd like to apologise to my VR brothers with Vives. Upon rereading my posts I feel I did indeed over react to perceived slights and teasing concerning Rift. I have a feeling I was projecting my frustrations at what the r/PCMR brigade were doing to the r/Oculus subreddit at the time and over reacting to gentle teasing here when in fact it wasn't the same type of behaviour at all. Please accept my apologies guys.

Looks like Irish devlopment of display technology could be the Rifts future.

If you're referring to the ASW update it started rolling out last week.
