€3200 for 2 teeth

    So wife needs root canal done on 2 molars. Smiles and another place are saying she needs a specialist to do it as its a molar. She rang around a few places and they all come in (strangely) at the exact same price of 1,600 per tooth (this includes crown in 6 months time)

    We really can't afford €3.2k and I think its a big mistake pulling 2 molars because of the money.

    I don't know what to ask here, but I am hoping someone has an alternative. Budapest does it for 160 euro per tooth but means travelling plus all the risk. The north maybe ?

    A root canal specialist will not charge 1600 per tooth because they wont quote you for crown. They dont do the crowns. Root canal is foundation work and very tricky at time, best not to cut corners on that.

    At the end of the day an implant will cost 3k so best get them treated well. Root canals and crowns will take at least 4-5 visits over several months to allow proper healing, so these high speed tourism places are cutting corners and achieve consistently sub optimal results.

    I'm guessing 900-1000 for root canal therapy and 6-700 for the crown afterwards. This seems accurate in terms of pricing. I would agree with Fitz, best not to cut corners on the root canal or the crown as you could end up losing the teeth anyway.

    She's decided to get one pulled and do root canal on other. Just can't afford both tbh. Thanks for your help.

    Jaysus, might be worth researching costs in the UK/ other nearby EU countries and getting Mr. O'Leary to fly ye over for the day!
    I know dental is expensive in Ireland, but that seems mental!

    We priced the north. 500 for root canal and approx 450 more for crown. With 3-4 trips up, loss of days pay and diesel theres not much in it.

    Budapest was an option, but with advice here about number of visits and quality coupled with a young family, its too big an ordeal.

    Hopefully in the future if things pick up financially she could get an implant.

    In the north or Budapest you will not get it done cheaper by a root canal specialist, there is a big difference between a general dentist doing a complex root canal and a endodontist. Comparing a general dentist one place to specialist at home is what causes this persistent myth of cheaper prices. Always compare like with like, dental work is not the same everywhere and as such not directly comparable, it's it's totally reliant on the person that does it.

    If this could be done well by a general dentist your general dentist would have done it for her. Be very sure you know the person is a endodontist.
