Shooter apparently a disgruntled former employee of the station, according to Sky News.

Can they not start requiring extensive means to obtain licenses for guns over there? Anyone going for one should have to pass a fuking psych exam if this is what's going to be happening so frequently...although it's too late now, even if they do ban guns it'll still be too easy for nutcase kunts to get them

    RT.com post this sympathetic message:
RT previously posted the video of the shooting, but has removed it in solidarity, after the station said it did not want the two journalists to be remembered for their last tragic moments.

    Along with this image.
    <mod snip>image removed</mod snip>

Which seems a bit hypocritical really. Either report it, or don't. Show her last moments or don't.

formal employee of the station. he has been identified.

BREAKING: @GovernorVA says shooter believed to be "disgruntled employee" of @WDBJ7. Troopers in pursuit now.

Former employee of the station with a vendetta allegedly. Worrying stuff when someone would do that to a former coworker

Agreed the families don't need that picture in their minds

Just as I thought... it seemed too bizarre to be just a 'random' shooting.

Just thinking out loud here but is this kind of stuff really primarily an American phenomenon or is it just that the US is so media heavy that it seems like that it's only really the US that this stuff occurs in? Like are kids sshooting up their schools in Turkmenistan every few months but we simply don't hear about it?

Most people tend to assume that there is a qualitative difference to be made between a mature democracy and an oppressive central Asian state but maybe there isn't! If such incidents were happening in Turkmenistan (per your example) we'd be lucky to hear of it as the country has very restricted media (sat dishes are banned for Petes sake).

    Going Postal stikes again.....

"Means" does not always mean "Financial Means".

What exactly gave you this notion? I will lol if it's because of 'means' like the other poster pointed out...

probably burglars and stuff mostly. i'm not an advocate of guns for everyone, but they are quite effective at deterring burglars and protecting people's homes over there. quite a few criminal studies show that most don't go near houses they know have guns in them for their own sakes. pretty sad state of affairs though when they only thing stopping someone from breaking into your house is that you would likely kill them in retaliation.

I was watching some show about Dara O' Briain and Ed Byrne touring along the Pan-American highway, it touched on the level of casual violence , gun crime and murder in places like San Salvador, Mexico and Honduras and there it is off the chart.
At one point they were filming and noticed that behind them in the background was the dead body of a murder victim just lying in the street.

Of course this is of no interest to people that want to be the first to post 'Murica

    RIP.

Would love to hope this would change things. It won't. The situation in the US will continue to deteriote until the only way people can interact with each other will be by screaming at one another from heavily armed and armoured tanks.

This was the best tweet I saw on the subject from Dan Hodges, I think it pretty much sums up the whole gun control thing:

"In retrospect Sandy Hook marked the end of the US gun control debate. Once America decided killing children was bearable, it was over."

    It's exactly what I thought.

He claims he's numb, but apparently not so numb as to forget some self publicity on twitter.
