    Hi all,

I know there is a sperate Dell laptop thread but thought this deserved it's own thread:

Just bought a Dell Studio 15 (4gb ram, 320gb hardrive, 512 ATI seperate graphics card) from here, for £500 delivered. Same spec laptop is €955 on Dell's website. Laptop is new sealed, covered by the Dell warranty. Also eligable for Windows 7 free upgrade.

Shop also sells refurbished, but most seem to be new.
Seller full 100% rating, and a registered Dell partner.

    Keith.

I highly doubt it. List the full spec please.

€850 will buy you a Studio 15 with i7 Quadcore on the Dell site. €808 with a 5% coupon (MZZNSRWB6F74DF). I don't know what kind of machine you are speccing that comes to €955 but to be honest your comparison seems fairly misleading.

OP - Remember to send them your address to get the warranty transferred in your name.

Just wanted to add that they used to be a lot better value a little while back but now you can probably find it cheaper on Dell outlet.

I don't know where you're getting that 955 price from. I just spec'd one up on Dell irelands site and it came to 634 delivered. And the core i7 is amazing spec for the cash.

Yep, just as I suspected, you've made a very misleading comparison. You've taken the base model (which has no savings) and specced it up, instead of taking one of the mid-range models that already have a good spec, and already have €262 off.

If you want to think you've gotten a great bargain go ahead, but don't be making out like you're getting a €980 machine for €550. You're not.

You'll buy a grand Studio 15 with the kind of specs that will suit an average laptop user for €550 brand new and direct from Dell. No need to buy a refurb from some bloke in the UK.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭keith_d99

Ah look forget it ... the laptop is for an average user (not myself)
The budget was €529 - the price of the base model from Dell (2gb ram, 160gb hard drive, integrated graphics card)

Instead of the base model - the average user is getting double hard drive size, double memory, and 512MB ATI Mobility RADEON HD 4570 graphics card (instead of integrated) for less than the €529

And the laptop is NEW not refurbished

No matter what the laptop - and yes there are better spec available for €808 - the person I was buying for was not going to pay that!

More bang for your buck = bargain!

I think Voodu explained himself here:
You've taken the base model and specced it up, instead of taking one of the mid-range models that already have a good spec

If you select the "Dell Studio 15" for €599 and spec it up, you get:

Whereas, if you just select the Studio 15 for €848, you get this:

    Studio 15 (N0053502)
    -T4300
    -320GB 5400rpm
    -3GB ram
    -ATI 4570

    € 583.99 inc vat. & shipping

They're the only important spec elements. Everything else in his copy&paste is standard spec, or pointless (eg €39 for blue paint). Only difference is 3GB ram vs 4GB, if you want to waste €37 upgrading from 3GB to 4GB be my guest.

Happy? Not even close to €980.

Its a brand new machine that barely costs more than his €550 (refurbished) machine, and is coming directly from Dell, with Win7 installed, no need for upgrade discs, no need to transfer warranty, and less hassle if something goes wrong (or if you want to send it back) compared to buying from a bloke on ebay.

  • Subscribers Posts: 16,573 ✭✭✭✭copacetic

apart from you saying his machine is refurbished again when he says it isn't, then yes I'm happy. That's actually a uselful post for people.

    copacetic wrote: »

I suspect they are refurbished even when advertised 'as new'. Just read the 'what do you receive'. Link. 'This product has been returned to Dell for a variety of reasons including cancellation and specification changes. All products have been tested and repackaged to Dell Outlet standards.'

Most of the 'brand new' ones on ebay are the same. They call them refurb when they're blemished models and 'brand new in box' when they're returns, but strictly speaking they are both classed as refurbs, and should be compared to the Dell outlet in terms of price, and not the regular Dell page (ie you'd want to be getting them very cheap to call it a bargain).

Maybe they're not, I don't know the seller from Adam. But the fact that you have to transfer the warranty means its already been registered and some of the warranty has expired. You'll know for sure if its a refurb by checking the service tag on Dells website - refurbished machines are permanently designated as such (and are worth less 2nd hand on account of the fact that people assume you got them cheap).

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,927 ✭✭✭keith_d99

his copy&paste is standard spec, or pointless (eg €39 for blue pain.

Firstly you doubted my price - you seem to have a problem with the copy & paste now ...... Anything else? The pointless cover is it?

Dunno what your problem is - was merely giving people another option when shopping for a Dell laptop. Dell online is not always the cheapest place to get Dell - prices change there by the day - as your spec (nicely formatted above - there's a good man) might well do tomorrow ..... Or not

btw the seller sold 10 of same exact same spec and colour today on eBay - so would highly doubt it's a refurb - but hey let's hope I'm right and your wrong on the refurb point.

The origional price is quoted in sterling.Other prices are quoted in euro's:confused:
Nobody has said what the OP,s quote would work out in euro's:confused:

My experiance of the Dell.ie site is the ACTUAL price goes up at an alarming rate as you add even the most basic upgrades.

The dell returns site also seems to not contain what could be called 'great bargains'

So what would this in Total cost in euro's and how does it compare to the other ways a Dell computer can be purchased:confused:

  • Moderators, Education Moderators Posts: 9,622 Mod ✭✭✭✭mayordenis

I'd consider the OP's post a definite bargain - would play most new games to high standard so happy days really for about 550 delivered ish.

Same laptop on Dell's UK Outlet is £336.20 + VAT = £384.10, if you know anyone living in NI or the UK. Only difference is T4200 vs T4300 CPU.
    Includes Windows Vista Home Premium.

Same laptop on Dell.co.uk is £499.00 incl VAT and Delivery.
Only difference is 250GB vs 320GB HDD.
Includes Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

Same laptop on Dell.ie is €548.99 incl VAT and Delivery.
Only difference is 250GB vs 320GB HDD and 3GB vs 4GB Ram.
Includes Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

So, I wouldn't be surprised if this EBay retailer is obtaining his Dells off the Dell Outlet UK site, as this is the only way he can make a reasonable profit. For UK residents it does not make sense to buy this way as they can get much better value purchasing direct off the Dell UK Outlet.

For residents of Ireland you can obtain a virtually identical machine direct from Dell.ie AND get Windows 7 included. $548.99 is about £495.00.
Dell's current offers expire at midnight tonight, so this may change in the morning :)

Kowing Dell it will probably be lower

And what really drives me nuts is that Dell do not let us buy off the Dell UK Outlet. I don't mind if they change the VAT to 21.5%, I just want the brilliant selection they have on there. Anyone know where the Dell Outlet stuff ships from? Would be very cruel if truckloads of Dell Outlet UK stuff was leaving Limerick every morning !!

I work in Dell in sales in Cherrywood - I dont do consumer sales and I dont work the Irish market, so no PM's thanks!

If you're buying anything - ring them and bargain. Try to get through to Dell Business Sales based in Cherrywood. The sales people will pretty much cut you as good a deal as they can. Something that is cheap anyways they wont be able to do much on - if you're buying something high spec they can get good discounts for you. It's largely down the the sales rep and the "business case" they present when presenting a reason to discount. BAd greedy reps will give you nothing - good reps will accept a low profit "revenue only" deal if you just tell them that you are after value. Dont bother trying to bargain if you are buying entry level muck - they are already very low profit and even lossmakers. Best scenario is when you are buying something uber good like an XPS etc.

Regarding ebayers - many of them can buy machines in Bulk for extremely low prices - in many instances at what appears to be a loss to the Dell sales person - but Dell will frequently take a modestly high revenue deal at negative margin (i.e. a "loss leader" of sorts) in order to

    a) boost revenue (also one of the many different sales targets)
    b) most models have costing "bricks" built into them so when it "appears" to be a lossmaker, acutally selling something for 50 eurons a unit less its apparent cost is actually still a profit for dell the corporation, but possibly not for the salesperson (see A above as to why they would still sell at a loss)

"refurbs" are orders refused on delivery or cancelled before being delivered. They are not "returned due to faults" and then tested and resold.

Dell outlet can sometimes have good bargains alright - as can ebayers - but you DO need to compare apples with apples to assess the real value. Pay particular attention to the warranty cover also.

Dr Bolouski,Yep when Cherrywood had salespeople the guy gave me a great deal on a desktop. My first computer May 2006!it still works just fine.
My big mistake was i thought then that memory meant the amount of GB,s on the hard drive and not the amount of RAM.So i ordered 80GB,s extra but left the order at just 512MB of RAM.

OH if only i had been a member of boards then:)
They were good in Cherrywood dealing with individuals, and the Limerick plant was turning out great hardware.shame on Dell for closing it.

Well they shut down the Limerick factory so all the PC's will come from Poland so the only difference between sending one to here or england could be a tiny cost in delivery. (But they add whats known as the "thick Paddy tax" where companies just naturally add on a few quid to anything sold in Ireland because they think we are not savvy customers willing to do research or shop around)

Have to say this is the truth, I got my laptop for 1500 18mths ago from haggling over the phone, I was comparing 9400s at the time and the final spec could only be got on an Alienware machine. Processor RAM HDD and GPU upgraded from the best on line at the time.

Just to update - received the laptop Friday - 2 days after ordering it. Laptop is defo not a refurb - is spanking new. Warranty is 3 years not 1 as I thought. Warranty is transferred over to me. free Windows 7 upgrade is ordered from Dell too.
