Anyone know how much a packet of cigarettes cost back in the 1980s? A pack of 10 as they were back then.

I read somewhere that they were around £1 for twenty in the late 80's and 27p for twenty in 1979.

    In 1974 10 gold bond was 10½p , while 20 major was 22p ,,

I started in Coolock Tech in 1974 and Myself and a buddy would have 5p each for lunch money so would still need to find a half p to get 10 gold bond.

    The good old days..

OH,, I started as a lounge boy in 1977, and a pint of Guinness was 37p ..

Sounds cheap but it probably wasn't back then?

I know it's not the 80's but I remember you could buy 10 smokes for £1.50 in '97. To think they're €10 a pack theses days

I think I remember them being about 50p for 10 around 1987 and a mars bar was about 20p, could be mixed up though and for some reason cant remember past then. Unfortunately I still smoke though.

In 1986/87 it was 85/90p for ten. 1.75/1.80 for 20. So in 1984 i'd say it would have been fairly close to 70p for ten 1.40 for twenty.

I started smoking around 1987 and it was 90-something, depending on the brand. 90-97p type thing for 10. Back then cigarettes didn't go up much per budget, 10p on a pack of 20 would have been the max. I was too young to drink, but a pint was around £1.60 at the time.

When did they go up in the budgets? Early 90s?

I remember in mid-80's (86/87) that it was 45p for 10 Major. Myself and another school friend used to go around bumming 5p from people, and we needed 9 suckers to afford a pack of 10.

    Late 1989 early 1990 10 Silk Cut Purple were 99pm or £1.

Myself and my mate used to go halfs every morning before school and share the pack throughout the day.

At the same time the price of a pint of larger was £1.65 allowing you 3 pints for £5.

The price went up sometime in 1990 ruling out that luxury.

This was in a provincial town, Castlebar, rather than a city.

Pints are still comparatively cheap in Castlebar.

A few weeks ago it was €5 a pint, any place I've been here in Kerry it's €5.50.

In the early 90s 20 John Player blue cost £1.92 (plus 8p for a box of matches)

In the mid 80s they were 10p each off Pat, the ice cream van man.

    The good ol' days.

Our local chippy also sold individuals for 10p in the 80s

Remember the same, in 1990-1992 ish you'd get 10 John Player Blue, a box of matches and a penny sweet for the pound. Was nice and easy to calculate going halves, 50p each.

For a 10er you'd get 4 pints of Fosters, 10 smokes, and your part of the taxi home.

Small shop near school sold singles. You got 2 red (strike anywhere) matches as well! 😀

    Not your ornery onager
