MOD NOTE

Don’t say you weren’t warned!!

And please don’t feed - report & let the Mod team deal with Troublesome Posters/Trolls

Severe Weather Advisory **UPDATED 25/02/2018**

An unusual winter weather event is heading for Ireland, the UK and continental Europe from the east for next week.

Hazards:
  • Snow
  • Ice
  • Frost
  • Low Temperature

Current advisory level from Met reann: Yellow

Potential warnings: Orange/Red

  • Turning progressively colder over the weekend and in to Monday
  • Significantly colder from Tuesday and for the rest of the week.
  • All areas are at risk of some harsh cold conditions (ice, frost, low temperatures, snowfalls) at various times.

There is a significant risk of transport and other disruption next week. Eastern and southern counties are most at risk.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Sunday/Monday

Feeling increasingly cold and raw in brisk southeast winds. Mainly dry, some light snow showers on south and east coasts later. Skies mostly clear.

Top temperatures on Sunday 3 to 7c (coldest in the east), Monday 1 to 4c (coldest in the east)

Tuesday

Increasingly frequent and heavy snow showers effecting eastern counties (these may fall as rain, hail or sleet in the morning/early afternoon). The snow accumulating by evening. Mainly dry elsewhere. A little milder than Monday in parts.

Snow showers frequent and becoming more widespread overnight as winds turn more ENE. Further accumulations. Disruption likely Wednesday morning.

Raw. Top temperatures 0 to 6c (coldest in the east)

Wednesday --> Thursday

Progressively colder. Projected temperatures on Wednesday -2 to 0c (coldest in the east and north), Thursday -3 to -1c (coldest in the east).

Widespread heavy snow showers (with an increasing risk of thunderstorms in coastal counties) or longer periods of more organised snow most frequent in the east and southeast with further widespread accumulations. Disruption is highly likely.

Friday/Saturday

For Friday and the weekend winds will be increasing and it will feel very raw with temperatures likely to remain close to or below freezing. Winds should remain easterly or north easterly. There is potential for a major snow event through this period as the deep cold air tries to hold on under assault from southern weather systems. Further significant accumulations and disruption are possible at this point.

The likelihood of very significant and highly disruptive snowfall for Friday/Saturday has increased. Make sure to keep up to date with the forecast.

Night

Night time temperatures on Sunday and Monday will range 0 to -3c and 0 to -5c respectively with sharp to severe frosts.

Tuesday night -1 to -6c (coldest in the western half)

Wednesday to Friday nights: 0 to -9c (coldest in the west where winds will be lightest and colder over any snow fields)

Projected windchill:

-8 to -15c

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please keep up to date with the model discussion thread and excellent posts here for more in depth detail.

This forecast is the most accurate assessment of the model data available to us as of today, therefore it is subject to change somewhat. You should make preparations in anticipation of some disruption.

I'll keep the OP updated.

This chart shows the air mass coming toward Ireland from around 1,500 meters up (this is used because it is far easier to define air mass at altitude rather than the surface which is subject to geographical considerations).

This is going to be a disaster from a farming point of view. Hardship on man and beast after an already very challenging previous 7 months.

Kermit, thank goodness you're ok. The level of concern for you and your whereabouts caused the previous thread to become locked

Sub -8 uppers from Monday afternoon solidly through. No reason why anything from lunchtime onwards that falls out of the sky in Leinster won't be snow.
