    Severe Weather Advisory **UPDATED 25/02/2018**

An unusual winter weather event is heading for Ireland, the UK and continental Europe from the east for next week.

    Hazards:
    • Snow
    • Ice
    • Frost
    • Low Temperature

Current advisory level from Met reann: Yellow

      Potential warnings: Orange/Red

      • Turning progressively colder over the weekend and in to Monday

      • Significantly colder from Tuesday and for the rest of the week.
      • All areas are at risk of some harsh cold conditions (ice, frost, low temperatures, snowfalls) at various times.

icon4.png There is a significant risk of transport and other disruption next week. Eastern and southern counties are most at risk.

      Sunday/Monday

Feeling increasingly cold and raw in brisk southeast winds. Mainly dry, some light snow showers on south and east coasts later. Skies mostly clear.

Top temperatures on Sunday 3 to 7c (coldest in the east), Monday 1 to 4c (coldest in the east)

      Tuesday

Increasingly frequent and heavy snow showers effecting eastern counties (these may fall as rain, hail or sleet in the morning/early afternoon). The snow accumulating by evening. Mainly dry elsewhere. A little milder than Monday in parts.

Snow showers frequent and becoming more widespread overnight as winds turn more ENE. Further accumulations. Disruption likely Wednesday morning.

Raw. Top temperatures 0 to 6c (coldest in the east)

      Wednesday --> Thursday

Progressively colder. Projected temperatures on Wednesday -2 to 0c (coldest in the east and north), Thursday -3 to -1c (coldest in the east).

Widespread heavy snow showers (with an increasing risk of thunderstorms in coastal counties) or longer periods of more organised snow most frequent in the east and southeast with further widespread accumulations. Disruption is highly likely.

      Friday/Saturday

For Friday and the weekend winds will be increasing and it will feel very raw with temperatures likely to remain close to or below freezing. Winds should remain easterly or north easterly. There is potential for a major snow event through this period as the deep cold air tries to hold on under assault from southern weather systems. Further significant accumulations and disruption are possible at this point.

The likelihood of very significant and highly disruptive snowfall for Friday/Saturday has increased. Make sure to keep up to date with the forecast.

      tempresult_mbn7.gif

      Night

Night time temperatures on Sunday and Monday will range 0 to -3c and 0 to -5c respectively with sharp to severe frosts.

Tuesday night -1 to -6c (coldest in the western half)

Wednesday to Friday nights: 0 to -9c (coldest in the west where winds will be lightest and colder over any snow fields)

      Projected windchill:

      -8 to -15c

Please keep up to date with the model discussion thread and excellent posts here for more in depth detail.

      https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057844498

This forecast is the most accurate assessment of the model data available to us as of today, therefore it is subject to change somewhat. You should make preparations in anticipation of some disruption.

      I'll keep the OP updated.

Excellent post Kermit, hoping for some of the snow action in the rebel county!

This chart shows the air mass coming toward Ireland from around 1,500 meters up (this is used because it is far easier to define air mass at altitude rather than the surface which is subject to geographical considerations).

This is going to be a disaster from a farming point of view. Hardship on man and beast after an already very challenging previous 7 months.

Sub -8 uppers from Monday afternoon solidly through. No reason why anything from lunchtime onwards that falls out of the sky in Leinster won't be snow.

      1. Well it looks like we are set for quite the cold spell This forum gets extremely busy during these weather events and for the most parts the thread are really enjoyable and you will garner lots of knowledge. Although before you start posting we would like to summarise a few house rules here :
      2. During weather events we take zero tolerance approach to trolling or bickering. Cards, warnings and/or bans from the forum will be handed out as appropriate. It gets so busy that this is the only option we have.
      3. Please don't quote images or charts in your replies.
      4. If you feel someone is trying to cause trouble, please use the Report Post function and let the Mod Team deal with it. Don't respond/react on-thread and further derail it.
      5. PLEASE don't repeatedly ask will it snow in your backyard - read the thread.
      6. If you post pictures that are not your own from Facebook or Twitter, you must follow these guidelines:
      7. All Images taken from Twitter must always be embedded using the URL as in this example https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/show...postcount=1039
      8. You cannot copy and paste images from Twitter and post them on Boards.ie.
      9. With Facebook, you need the creator's permission to copy an image belonging to them and post it on Boards.ie.
      10. You must also credit the creator of the image if you do get permission

The Technical Discussion Thread ( Please don't post in here if you’re looking to tell us its snowing or you want to know will it snow in your back yard )
      https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/show...p?t=2057844498
The FI Thread ( This is usually for charts that are 120 hours or more away )Although a lot of these charts will probably end up in the technical discussion thread anyway

Can I suggest as well, if you are going to post a live report of conditions give at least county and perhaps an idea of altitude (change profile description to avoid having to repeat)

And also for the sake of the servers, don't spam F5. Refreshing every 5 minutes instead of every 2 minutes won't kill anyone but will reduce the load on the servers by 60% as a mundane example.

My sister is making a long journey home due to land in Dublin on Tuesday about 2pm.

Anyone care to make a prediction as to whether DUB airport will cope!

I've alerted her and she is glad I told her that there could possibly be problems.

If there has been any more than a couple of cm of snow at that stage - which is likely - there is about a 50/50 chance of the runway being open in between clearings.

If people could post it it would be handier, I use mobile most of the time and cannot see what people have in their profile.

And during lambing season too! New grass growth will be halted temporarily while there is a fodder crisis.
