New SF leader

So nominations for the new leader of SF closed today

And surprise surprise there was only one.

Mary Lou McDonald.

How can a party with 22 TDs (excluding Adams), 7 Senators, 27 MLAs and 6 MPs only muster a single nomination for a leadership contest.

And it's not the first time.

In the north last year the very same thing happened.

Odd that.

Or is it, or is it that SF are not like your usual political party.

Certainly in Ireland no other part has managed to maintain a scandal ridden leader for 30+ years and then when it's time to election a new one no contest takes place.

That's the stuff of developing world despots or socialist utopias

"you do what we tell you to do", seems to be how that party is organised.

No dissent or thought allowed.

Compare and contrast:

Peadar Tóibín; opposes party on abortion - expelled for 6 months and comes back into party fold. Still campaigning against party position on abortion.

Lucinda Creighton, ex FG: opposes party on abortion along with four others - Creighton loses Ministry, all expelled from party and are told they will be deselected and are effectively forced to leave and set up new party.

Surely the last bit in this is wrong. Was she not kidnapped and indoctrinated into a cult?

Genuinely looking forward to her tenure as leader. And genuinely don't know if she can grow the party.
It won't be boring anyhow.

This is not the case with Mary Lou. She was a member of Fianna Fail for a year. Then she opted – chose – to join Sinn Féin. She could have stayed with Fianna Fail or any other southern party and could no doubt have forged a successful career within those ranks.

Interesting that SF both sides of the border, or No1 and No2 in charge so to speak, are women.

Imo, this is a major revamp of the party, to change their profile, appeal to a new breed of voter, to make them 'acceptable' to people they may not have been to in the past. Less baggage.

I still can’t get my head around the concept of a “pro life” shinner....

for what. the post is very very serious. she is a fantastic speaker and calls out the other parties on their behaviour without fear or favour. she is the best replacement for our boy gerry.
