Company to do a family tree?

Hi,

My mother has always wanted to do a family tree and for a milestone birthday we thought it would be nice to get her one. Is there any company that would assist her with such a thing? The research and filling one out?

A lot of the enjoyment of a family tree comes from compiling it yourself.

Perhaps you could order a framed blank family tree chart as a birthday present for your mother which could become the gift that keeps on giving as you add to it over time.

And on the day of her birthday, assuming you have a family gathering, it would be the ideal time to get the ball rolling, quizzing herself and her relatives on their knowledge of the generations past.

I picked up a brochure from www.my-history.co.uk a while back. I haven't used them yet but their website might be a good starting point to get ideas for what you're looking for.

thanks for your reply, but she's been talking about it for years, so I think if she had an appointment with someone, had to have everything prepped and someone that would guide her through the process she'd be more likely to do it..

There is a list of researchers on the National Library's website.

http://www.eneclann.ie/

Are specialists in genealogical research.

In the interests of transparency I should say that about 16 years ago I did some research for them for a T.V. show (they do a lot of the background work for programmes like Who Do You Think You Are?) but apart from that have no involvement with them.
I did find them professional, knowledgeable, and friendly to deal with.

Eneclann have rebranded themselves as the Irish Family History Centre.

Also if you do a search in this forum, you'll find some similar threads with other suggestions. As well as modding this board, I also work professionally.

Why not ask Pinky about this by PM? She is a highly regarded qualified genealogist that also runs a course on how to research.

It's a bit of a 'piece of string' situation. With a bit of luck, clear and extensive parish records and a family who stayed in the one place, you could potentially do a couple of lines in an afternoon, then there could be some you would struggle to find on the 1911 census. It all depends what info you have starting off.

Here's a page with rates that seem fairly accurate to me: http://www.irishgenealogyservices.com/services-costs

As Spurious says, it's not always possible to give a calculation. Some branches will be easier to research than others. If we get to a point where we find, say, a marriage without any parents names, then usually we won't be able to definitively go further back.

The way I normally work is a quick free assessment, then an agreed number of hours of research plus expenses. At the end of that time, I would consult the client if I felt there was still more to be found or agree to stop there and produce a report. Happy to talk privately if anyone wants to PM me.

Why not enrol her on the next genealogy course run by PinkyPinky?

I enrolled in an online course on genealogy recently - I found it a bit too basic for the level I've managed to get to on my own; I needed it 10 years ago. Also, I found navigating the site too clunky, so to my shame.... I dropped out.
