I too dont really want my personal and professional lives to mix. I have posted a few things on boards and I could be identified straight away with the research I am doing. But briefly: I have an Hons. Degree, a Post-Grad. Dip., a Masters and am currently doing a phd that covers a few fields.

By god a stats sticky would be excellent!!! Stats is the area I would need most help in.

    Me too!

Was reviewing that paper today, and its really just a statistics exercise, and I dont have a flippin clue about that. Lovely paper otherwise. I really have to ask here about the stats. But it'll wait until Monday.

Amazing how many people are struggling with stats! It supports my long-held belief that most grad students are not taught stats by someone who knows what they're doing and that most don't try to learn on their own. Sad.

I've tried to approach some of the material myself, but found the learning curve to be intimidating. Any recommendations on a good stats book?

It depends on what area of statistics you'll need the most. I don't have any particular recommendations but it's a good idea to get several books together of varying complexity and read each of them on the same topic. Throw in a manual for the computer program you're most likely to use and you're halfway there. Having a good, experienced mentor to call on for advice would be invaluable too.

    Part of the problem, sadly.

Cool, so the people who talked about spreading the word? Is that still an option?

Does anyone here feel qualified for starting some threads for stickying? Maybe a stats basics thread with an introduction and maybe some questions?

Maybe some other widely used techniques or issues in research?

Depending on how busy this forum gets, I'll be appointing mods from various disciplines.

Yep, that sounds like a great idea. I'm starting a stats course this year so I hope I can contribute here.

I seriously don't belong here, as I'm an undergrad, but I'm gonna pop around every now and again.

Studying Med Chem, currently working in a lab in Dublin until college starts up again.

Strictly speaking I don't really belong here but am about to write up my PhD proposal any day now :D. Previous research experience is all in the social sciences/ HSR etc. I'm ok-ish with basic spss stuff but definitely need a refresher in the more complex stats.

[part-time] psychology undergrad but have good knowledge of spss and carrying out Quality Of Life Surveys at the moment.

I am a final year psychology student and I hope to get into the research side of things when I finish so this forum would be great. I don't agree with it being private as I'm sure that standard fare will be general methodology type questions. If someone is worried about being 'found out' then they just shouldn't post?

Can't believe I missed this forum for so long.

BA/BAI in computer engineering (the BA is in maths, it's a TCD anachronism), currently working as research staff in TCD on the floor below g'em on a commercialisation project while completing my PhD which is on applying a filter based on differential geometry to a mathematical problem in robotics.

    Hi all,

Looking for advice regarding Stats as a future career. I'm considering MSc in Stats and was wondering what career options are like afterwards. My background is a science degree with physics/maths. I'm a mature student so employment at the end of the course is very important. Anyone done similar course and had any experience in the jobs market. I'm at one of those crossroads that you come across in life. :-) I could go down a completely different road which is a longer haul but probably a better option for employment.

    Any advice very welcome.

    Cheers
