Incredible performance v SA. The physicality, accuracy and speed they played at was the best I've seen from them. The intent in their play was obvious from the first few seconds. Just a pity they messed up at the end to give SA one last opportunity. Should have been a famous win.

Of course, they'll probably go and lose limply to Aussie now. That's how Irish sport works. Just when you've got your hopes up they go and meekly exit.

Lads are through to the quarter finals where they'll play Australia, lost to Kenya 29-12 but then drew with South Africa 19-19 after conceding a try on the last play of the game but qualify as runner up for the pool.
That was so sick, kicked the ball.out with one second left in the match giving South Africa a lineout deep in our 22.

Is this an event with further matches for qf loses (5/8 Place matches).

Some iffy ref calls. That clean out didn't seem legal... And pulling o shea up for sealing when there was obviously no challenge from oz on the ball

Absolutely chucked that game away. There for the taking.

Conroy with some lovely tries but drops the ball to lose possession and then immediately missed a tackle for the try. Knocks on the final play too to finish the game

Kennedy far too ponderous in possession.

These lads clearly have the skillset to be winning these tournaments. They just need to start stringing performances together. Real lack of consistency.

We play Spain at 18.30 in Vancouver, Kenya at 21.43 and NZ at 1.35

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,348 ✭✭✭S.M.B.

Well that wasn't a good start.

Spain score under the posts with the last play to win 28 - 26.

High risk from Spanish paid off. Too many penalties and slow defensive shape. Still much to learn.

"You've lifted him up and he's landed on his back"

That's the reasoning the ref gives for a yellow. Is that not what a tackle is? Totally inadequate.

He blew another farcical penalty on Kelly where he was pinned down after making the tackle and the ball was still available. Seriously frustrating

Lot of positives to be taken out of that new Zealand game though. These guys are clearly capable of competing against the best. They need to string some performances together though.

Really liking the look of Jack Kelly as a sevens player. Some brilliant moments

Thought the yellow seemed fair enough myself.

Very unfortunate not to be progressing into today's games. Spain were fortunate to win late last night too.

Vancouver's been a bit of a tale of 'what if?' for Ireland - last gasp loss to Spain, and then 24-21 up against NZ and in possession with 2:50 to go. Score there instead of getting driven into touch and it's difficult for NZ to get back. The last game against France was a similar story. Ireland were pushing for the winning score but France just managed to hold out. France are good at putting pressure on at the breakdown.

Next placing game is against the Japs at 19:54 apparently.

would be big shame if this happens. Costs obviously reason or at least main reason this happens.
Could see world rugby possibly use this as reason to cut core teams as well? For same reasons ie costs.

Wonder whether they'll select players from Northern Ireland now as well?

Not a chance given how rugby is setup here.

World Rugby has today announced the remaining rounds of the Women’s and Men’s HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series 2020 in Langford, London, Paris, Singapore and Hong Kong have been cancelled due to the ongoing and dynamic global nature of the COVID-19 pandemic, bringing the 2020 Series to an early conclusion.

All four provincial academy squads will return to their designated High Performance Centre on July 20th and follow the established COVID protocols to safeguard their return to rugby.

Academy players will complete an 8 week pre-season before joining senior squad members to compete in a series of A fixtures in late September and early October.

There will also be three interprovincial 7s tournaments during this period which will see academy selections compete with the Ireland 7s squad.

this academy 7's tournament looks a bit much.. the irish 7's team playing a provincial academy side?

shouldnt the irish side destroy academy sides in a game of 7's?

One of the biggest waste of times I think we'll ever see in Irish Rugby history. Why can't they have a high performance camp and invite new players in, nothing wrong with that. But this..
