Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Worms in compost

    I have a standard plastic "dalek" compost bin, working well over the last two years, producing nice dark brown, (but very moist), compost.

    But it is now absolutely crawling with worms. See pic for view from top, but also when I went to remove the actual finished compost from bottom, that too was crawling with worms (about 10 worms per small handful).

    Is that good? Or bad? Is the compost in it that's full of worms now "done" or is it a sign that I need to let it compost for longer?

    "Earthworms speed up the composting process, aerate the organic material in the bin, and enhance the finished compost with nutrients and enzymes from their digestive tracts. The best kind of earthworms to use are red worms, also known as "red wigglers" and "manure worms".

    You want worms in your compost for lots of reasons, they are vital to a healthy compost bin, don't be afraid of them.

    Thanks all - I had done a fair bit of reading and googling, and all said SOME worms are good, and I was initially delighted to see them. My issue is that there are now practically more worms than compost - see side view here! It is more worm than compost!

    But I will work away on the principle of the more the merrier.....

    If they are red wrigglers, you could sell them. In fact i would have bought some from you if you had posted this a month ago.
