Steering column fault code

I searched for similar problem but didn't see any on this forum, so here's the query on my 2007 VW Jetta 1.4 petrol (electric steering column):

Engine Management Light is on and I have a fault code showing "Steering Column Module No Communications U0212 Open Circuit/Short With Ground"

So the U0212 is pretty common, but I have had this fault erased twice by mechanics, but Engine Management light reappears after few days. Though it does go off from time to time for few hours.

I have checked all fuses relating to steering column but all seemed fine. Used handy website for fuse board map:

Anyone have any experience with this? Or perhaps any info on how I check grounding points for the steering column control panel. I know this is under the steering wheel but looks beyond my ability to replace it (due to airbag etc).

Thanks in advance

The control module itself ("clock spring") is popular for failing in those. I wouldn't be doing wiring checks or anything, the likelihood is you need a new module.
