June Bank Holiday Races 1,100 metres

Half Moon’s Bob Bushell Race Saturday 1 June 2013 and Kilmartin Cup Sunday 2 June 2013 Dublin

Half Moon SC will shorten both their races on the June Bank Holiday weekend to approximately 1,100 metres.

Most races on the Leinster Open Sea Calendar are set at approximately 1,600 metres subject to wind and tidal conditions. The exceptions to this rule are the The Eddie Herron, The Island Race and Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race which are approximately 2,000 metres and Wendy Herbst (Wicklow 3 kilometre), Lough Dan 5 and 10 Kilometres.

The weather in May was unusually cold and it is unlikely that the sea temperature will warm up by the June Bank Holiday. Both Killiney and Bray are deep water and stone beaches, so the water temperature at both locations will be colder than other locations.

Novice Open Sea Swimmers

Half Moon, warmly welcomes new swimmers to the Leinster Open Sea Races. However, Half Moon kindly requests that novice swimmers who would like to participate for the first time in the Leinster Open Sea Races wait until the following week end 8th June for the Garda Race on Portmarnock Beach.

There is still over 31 Races on the Leinster Open Sea Calendar. There are plenty of opportunities to qualify for the 94th Dublin City Liffey Swim or the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race.

Acclimatise to Sea Swimming

The Open Sea Committee requests that all swimmers in the Leinster Open Sea Races acclimatise to swimming in the sea before presenting to compete in a Leinster Open Sea Race. Swimmers should be prepared to swim from twenty minutes to thirty minutes in cold water and or a minimum distance of sixteen hundred metres.
