    Has anyone experienced buying classic/vintage car from abroad? is it possible to use it on Irish roads with all benefits of reduced tax and insurance? cheers

    I have.

    And its the most expensive route to driving a vehicle on Irish roads.

    With all the costs involved in maintaining a classic vehicle in safe roadworthy condition,

    a better option for an economic driving experience , is to buy a normal car.

    Economy and classic car ownership do not fit into the same sentence.

    Classic car ownership is because you are drawn to owning these vehicles

    despite the costs:)

    No. No one has ever bought a classic/vintage car from abroad.

    Yes!

    But you'll only get insured on it if you also have a modern car with all the benefits of full price tax and insurance. Not so cheap now!

    Yes I have. the main thing as with any car is to get as good as you can reasonably afford. Popular makes that are reliable and with easy parts availability are VW Beetle, MGB Morris Minor, Rover P6 and Saab. If over 30 years old VRT is 200 and classic tax of 56. However, it isn't easy to get a policy on its own and will be similar to cost of normal insurance company will usually look for an engineers report. Helps a lot if you can do mechanical basics yourself. Cars I had were reliable and only time I was let down was when I ran out of petrol. A bonus is that after a few years the car is often worth more that what you paid for it.
