Importing a pistol from NI to Roi

    What will be the procedure to import a 22lr pistol from northern Ireland to the republic of Ireland.

    you can import it yourself or have a RFD bring it in dealer in the North to dealer in the south, they look after all the paper work.

    No problem at all to bring it in yourself if you get licenced for it first.

    After making sure that it has either five-round magazines or the chambers blocked to reduce it to a five shot...........

    You cant do anything till you have your licence or sub for it, as a Pistol cant be imported unless there is an end user cert...ie the licence.
    Then you can have an RFD aplly for an import licence and movement order or you can do the process yourself...bit long winded...really not worth the hassle, if you sourced the pistol yourself you can pay the dealer in NI & then pay your RFD for doing the paperwork , transfer & transport.
    BTW , if you do want to do the process yourself you are also going to need a EFP and Firearm visitor cert to go & collect it in NI.

    Not as difficult as it seems Liffy once your licenced the import licence is free and takes about 2 weeks to process and the pistol can be couriered to your door.

    I have done it with Pistols from NI and several rifles from the UK, it is a lot simpler to do with rifles or shotguns as they can be sent to a RFD without an end user cert, a pistol is very different and while not a huge ordeal it takes quite a bit of paperwork, & it takes time to obtain an import licence as a private individual from the DOJ...

    You'd wonder why it takes so long seeing as it's the same firearms laws that apply (apart from the 5 round end of things).

    I guess you have to pay for firearm in full at UK dealer for them to give you serial number for license application. In the event that license was refused where would you stand with refund? (Considering UK RFD could be holding firearm for 3 months).

    you.d need to be a step ahead and have all that discussed with the RFD prior to buying a pistol of him,
    I'd be looking to put a deposit on a pistol, on the understanding I get licensed for it cus if you pay in full its your pistol, you might not have a licence to use it but you still own it.

    Im guessing the vast majority of Northern and Southern dealers import and export across the border regularly, there is no mystery to it.
