Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Brown Bin for Food Waste

    just heard on the radio there an ad for Donegal county council , brown bins on the way for food waste arriving soon for towns and villages with over 500 population.

    Although I havent received a brown bin here in Sligo for food waste from my waste provider I have been hearing quite a about them for over a year now and how they were being rolled out nationwide.

    Just wanted to ask have you got one?, are you due to be getting one soon ? - and if you have one how are you getting on with it? - if you haven't got one and dont look like you will be receiving one how are you disposing of your food waste presently? - in the landfill bin is it?

    We got one in Tubbercurry last month with McGraths waste.

    Its grand, but they collect on a Tuesday morning every 2 weeks. Whereas regular bin collection is every Thursday morning. I always forget to leave it out!

    Suprisingly, you can put used kitchen roll into it

    thats our provider too. - Do you find the food waste bin smelling or problems with vermin or anything?

    We ve had one for many year's now, they stink like hell, so I now power wash it regularly, I'm not aware of vermin issues though

    dont have one - dont eat meat so veggie waste goes in compost bin gets used as manure every year (wormery could sort meat waste out ) only 2 of us but we dont have leftovers. just peelings. in would take me a year to fill a brown bin.

    Top tip: Put food waste in the freezer, in a brown paper bag. Place it in the bin just before the bin goes out out for collection. Less smell, slime and cleaning.

    What about the cost of buying an extra freezer to fit all the waste food into?

    Get the biodegradable bags also. They can go in the bin too.

    the waste is less than the food you took out of the freezer

    We have one for two years now, grand in the winter but in summer it can stink to high heaven, and flies make a right nuisance around it, best thing about it is we copped on to the amount of food waste we had, and have really cut down, so much so that we are giving the bin back soon.

    If you mean compostable sure. If you mean biodegradeable plastic..I say avoid them.
    Biodegradeable plastic is just green-wash. The plastic breaks down to smaller particles faster. What's the benefit? It probably gets in the food chain faster too.

    I read recently that a Uni in England did a test on these bags and found them virtually un-degraded after a year whether in sea or soil.
    I believe specialist treatment is required for bio-deg. plastics to get any benefit.

    Yeah same here regarding reducing food wastage.

    We use an outside composter for green waste (veg and fruit peelings) that over time with little effort generates compost for shrubs and flowers.
