Age of sail book. help remembering the name

    It was an age of sail book, factual and telling the story of someone who sailed around south america/carribean (and also futher afield if I remember correctly) It was one of the first popular books on the subject of south american trade/piracy/exploration)

    Here's a few bits of info I remember from the introduction and the wikipedia article. The man was originaly to be sent to Jamacia to run a plantation. From the wikipededia article it was stated that a famous writer of the day was hired to re-write the manuscript as it was so well written.
