Patterson's win from 3:00 in this video:

What a turn of pace into the final bend. Very impressive.

31:01 and new German NR for Klosterhalfen. She lapped the entire field.

Thought she might run a little faster, but it was a strong performance, given the lack of competition, and incredibly high humidity. I expect she’s capable of low 30:xx in ideal conditions. She’s probably a lock for Top 5 in Tokyo.

I saw somewhere that her splits were 15:39 for the first 5k and 15:22 for the second, so probably a fairly measured effort. She has a great range:

    800m 1:59.65
    1500m 3:58.92
    3000m 8:20.07
    5000m 14:26.76
    10,000m 31:01.71

Should have a great career ahead of her.

Sinead Diver running well also, 32.29 10k.
And while I hate to bring up the age thing. It is savage running

To be fair, Sinead has gone a minute quicker than that, 17 months ago. That's nothing special by her standards.

Yes I'm well aware she has ran 31.25 in 2019,
Id imagine that the circumstances and competition were very different.
    Still great running imo

Ciara Mageean out of the weekend’s European Indoors.

Not in the right mood/frame mind she alluded to.

Put the vest on and represent your country...

This is what makes champions. Battling through “setbacks.”

If she's not physically in the shape, and if she's not mentally there (understandable given Jerry's passing - everyone deals with grief differently), then there's no point in her going just to go out in the heats.

Pity, as it's a really soft field, and a fully ready Mageean would win gold.

    Hope she's OK.

You don’t know what people are going through.

Back your athletes through thick and thin, rather than lecturing them about ‘the vest’.

She looked like she was struggling to hang on to the two and then just kicked for home with ease.

    Very impressive

The depth in Japanese running is impressive, a new NR at the recent Lake Biwa marathon, even Yuki got a PB.

A champion knows when to come out fighting and when to stay put and get things right.

"Put on your vest and represent and your country....."

Have to laugh at this, given the various reports of Sean Tobin saying he worries about where food will come from or Nadia Power having to pay for COVID testing out of her own pocket when she attends athletics meets around Europe.

Ciara Mageean has always represented Ireland with distinction both on and off the track (or indeed cross country course), and its a cheap shot to call that into question.

Its a disappointment for fans.....but its not all about us.

It just has an air of entitlement about it, really.

Ciara Mageean owes the Irish public absolutely nothing.

Well, picking and choosing when you will represent your country never sat well with me

That's all I'll say.....I have certain standards. It's just me.

And, international athletes do owe their country....

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt here, but the reason read a bit like "I couldn't be arsed" because maybe I'm not in the best of form.

I'm sure both herself & her coach also have certain standards.

Totally disagree with the "couldn't be arsed thing" she clearly said she feels she is not where she wants to be, some people battle through "setbacks" well, others don't, in fact it could set some people back even more. This will be a disappointment to her but she has to do what's best for her & her running career. She is human & picking up the fact that it would most likely not benefit her or the Irish vest to run right now, try respect that.

    Fair points

McElhinney out as well - got a positive COVID test (apparently in between two negatives, so sounds unfortunate).

A sneak preview of the madness we will see at the Olympics later in the year - perfectly fit and healthy athletes having to pull out at the last minute due to asymptomatic positives, or worse, false positives.

The worry of such things will no doubt increase anxiety levels among some athletes.

Can't help thinking of Mr. Burns in the Casino.
Don't think they'll run too fast after substituting the carbon plate spikes for tissue boxes....

Alot of situations like Isaac Makwala will happen in the Olympics and the conspiracy group will have fun

Brian Fay replacing him. He had both 1500m + 3000m standards, so great to see him get a chance, and another DTC qualifier. Hope he has a good run.

Schedule for Torun (+ Startlists for Thursday + Friday):

    https://results.european-athletics.com/irs/en/results/athletics/daily-schedule.htm

Looking at the women's 800m, both Nadia and Siofra are the fastest in their respective heats by a couple of seconds (which is not a typical state of affairs for us at European championships!) and while it depends on how the rounds go, it's possible to see both making the final. At which point, medals are up for grabs. Siofra's college career generally points to her being a very good championship racer, including breaking the national indoor record in 2018 when coming 2nd in the NCAA Indoors. It'd be great to see our strength in depth in the women's 800m rewarded with a medal on the international stage!

Men's 800m and 1500m are going to be tough. It'll be hard to get out of the 1500m men's heats unless one of the guys finds themselves in a fast heat with lots of fastest-time qualifiers. Will be interested to see how both Robinson and Coscoran get on in a championship setting. In the 800m, English has great championship experience and McPhillips is obviously class but it might be a bit soon for him.

Siofra has flattered to deceive in major championships outside the collegiate circuit. I think a medal is a big ask. Getting out of the heats is the first step. She hasn't done that at a major senior championships yet, open to correction of course.

I agree with this. She has shown countless times on the collegiate circuit that she is capable of this but not at major international events yet.

I think she’s a very talented athlete, but she needs to break that duck. She was ranked in her final year at Villanova (as well as indoor 2nd she finished 4th in the NCAA outdoors) so the ability is absolutely there.

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,895 ✭✭✭Sacksian

Sure, she hasn't excelled at senior international championships yet (I think "flattered to deceive" is harsh!), but the NCAA is a pretty serious competition and running a national record in a championship final is indicative of *something*.

Of course, she could be out in the heats but I'm choosing to look for predictors of a positive performance!! I'd be hopeful that, if not this week, there's a big performance coming from her at some stage.

What tv channel has the best coverage of the indoors?

Want to set it up to record.

    Is it on youtube also?

I suspect she'll step up this week and run well.

But a medal would be a stretch IMO.
