Does anyone know what happened in the last hand(s) he played? Whoever took his money, whether by skill or some sick beat, must be going through hell.

    Its hardly his fault tho

Its crazy that in such a built up area with houses and businesses everywhere that there isn't more CCTV. It's 2019 ffs

On Crimecall, they traced him via CCTV up to the Collins Ave junction but after that junction he was not on the CCTV cameras as it was checked. He must have hailed a taxi hence the appeal for taxi drivers for info, he could be anywhere.

Apparently losing four grand would be no big deal to Jon. That's the type of money he would be gambling on a typical night : sometimes he would lose 5k, other nights he would win 10k etc.

We're not talking about losing the life savings or something, nothing remotely like that. It's very possible he had some form of mental or emotional episode after this though nonetheless.

I hope they find some peace. Whether they find him or know his whereabouts. The thoughts of not knowing where someone is must be terrifying. Having to go about your life not knowing where your partner, father, brother, son is. You would hope that he is safe. You would hope he would ring someone and say that he's safe or even, alive. That alone would put anyone at ease. I can't begin to imagine how is close family and friends are feeling. Seeing his photo on the Whitehall Road is heartbreaking. If losing 4k gambling wasn't a huge deal to him, then maybe there was something else lingering in his mind that no one knew about. He left his fiancee having a cafe on her own and he walked out of the hotel. I've never heard anything so heartbreaking. She must of been so confused. God love them all. I hope they get their answers.

Indeed, the poor guy could have been feeling depressed even before losing the money, who knows? The only thing that the guards don't seem to believe is that he was attacked or abducted.

4 grand he lost the previous night not a huge sum. I suppose he may of owed money out alright. People saying he headed for the sea, surely he was on CCTV somewhere else on the way. Maybe the Gardai werent on the ball.

Its really bizarre that the CCTV only follows him so far. For sure there would be black spots but he would get picked up again somewhere along his route. It makes the idea that he hopped in a taxi logical given the way he just seems to have vanished from an area with a lot of CCTV.

Regards owing money- is there any way to get tick at the private games that take place at these tournaments or is it strictly cash on the table?

Still a lot of money to lose. I understand he was a taxi driver so just an average working guy. His partner only arrived that morning and I do wonder if it could have been an issue with her that he lost money. I pass that hotel every day and also think he hopped in a Taxi. I hope his family can get some answers soon.

Gardai said losing four grand in a night was not particularly unusual for a regular poker like Jon and they reckon he still had several more grand on him. But they don't think anything sinister happened to him either.

I wouldn't think much of the Gardaí investigation if they don't think anything sinister happened to him - unless they have info that they aren't releasing.

I'd say he went for a swim with no intention of coming back.

There's still a large banner up about him around Whitehall/Collins Ave. It's been there a while. Very sad for the family.

Exactly, a combination of factors probably let to an unfortunate decision. Depressed + losing + bad beats + .......

Was there ever any update on this?

Nothing recent. I still see some tattered posters around D3.

It's a very sad and strange one. How can someone just disappear like that? It's only possible if you want to or someone wants you to disappear.

I've always wondered if he got information about a cash game or illegal casino and something went very wrong.

His poor family not knowing what happened.

Yeah seems to have gone stone cold, very sad outcome for the family for him to just vanish like that and never be found.

Very odd that there is still no news. If it was suicide surely a body would have been found by now

It was one year on Feb 9th 2020 since Icelandic man Jon Jonsson went missing in Dublin. There is now a private detective working on this case. Details on the Facebook page called Jon Jonsson missing in Dublin.

I can put the Private Detective's name & details here. The family said I could. Is that ok please? I am not that familiar with boards.ie rules?

He wouldnt even have to go in the sea; a canal or a city dock will do and there's no guarantee the body will surface again. A year underwater will erase the body and there will only small remains left.

Strange twist in this tale, a prisoner in Iceland is claiming it was all to do with another criminal and the poker game
Significant developments have emerged in the investigation into the mysterious disappearance of Jon Jonsson, who vanished without a trace in Dublin in February last year while at a poker tournament.

In a series of substantive advances in the case, police in Iceland have been informed that Mr Jonsson was killed "by accident" by a fellow countryman after a falling out over squandered gambling money.

An imprisoned criminal in Iceland has played an "instrumental" role in communicating a dramatic version of events, now under investigation, which it is claimed culminated in the murder of the taxi driver.

Police in Iceland have been informed that Mr Jonsson joined an illicit poker game on the Friday night, and lost more than €4,000 belonging to an Icelandic criminal. While Mr Jonsson was not involved in criminality, it has been reported to police that he came to Ireland with this large sum of cash belonging to the criminal.

The money was earmarked for poker registration purposes for a number of players.
But instead, it is claimed, Mr Jonsson got involved in a high-stakes game and lost the lot.

It is also alleged that he tried to leave when he began to lose but was not allowed and was "given a few slaps" by other card players, also believed to be foreign nationals.

The last images of Mr Jonsson show him leaving the hotel shortly after 11am. He is seen on CCTV turning right and walking north on the Swords Road.

It is now thought he was on his way to meet the Icelandic man whose money he lost gambling the night before.

In recent months, a criminal serving time in an Icelandic jail for theft is believed to have made contact with Mr Jonsson's family. This man is not thought to have been in Ireland when Mr Jonsson disappeared.

    Family

The criminal managed to put the family in touch with a woman "close to him".

It's understood the information conveyed contains allegations another Icelandic criminal killed the father-of-four "by accident" when he became angry about losing his money. This information is now under active investigation.

Private investigator Liam Brady, who was hired by the family, and was involved in the latest developments, confirmed his probe into the disappearance is over "for now".

Gardaí at Ballymun continue to actively investigate the case.

Hard to know what to make of that, like we know something happened but this latest version now involves a murder by a criminal 'by accident' and him disposing of the body without detection. It sounds far fetched and its coming from someone already locked up but at the same time this lad Jon has vanished into thin air.

So what is now being said is that the poker game was being used as a front for international money laundering. In the Regency hotel. Go figure.

As regards this poor man and his poor family and friends I will always be haunted by meeting them sticking up posters along the seafront and desperately looking and trying to
find answers themselves for their lost loved one.

I still ask again - that whole part of Dublin where the Regency/Bonnington is and that streatch of the road and other roads along there are intensively covered by traffic cameras that directly record and link into the media traffic watch studio that is broadcast daily on radio stations and that is based in Dublins city hall. The staff in there that are ‘employed’ under schemes by the radio station traffic watch have the technology to look at streets from different camera angles and to zoom in and magnify cars or people walking along roads. Why did the gaurds not simply ask for the traffic camera footage that was recorded and available at the time and replay his movements from when he left the building onto that busy road step by step????

Its not rocket science and it wouldn’t be the forst time there had been a total absence of technology knowledge or common sense investigating by the gaurds. CCTV systems can also often be recovered even when erased - even Nixon eventuLly knew that and that was in the 1970’s. There are private companies in Dublin that also
offer this service - including also some of the big 4.

I hope his family, fiance and friends find closure.

Well going by that latest article, he wasn't going to the Regency at all that day, he instead had to go meet the man whose money he had lost the night before. This might explain why there was no camera footage.

It might also explain why he left everything behind; maybe he felt that if he had no phone, cards or passport, then it would be harder to kidnap him. Or, worse that if he didn't return from the meeting within a couple of hours, it would be clear that there was something really wrong and his girlfriend woudl alert the Gardai.

???? He was STAYING in the Regency.

The Regency changed it name to Bonnington since the last high profile criminal gang ‘meeting’ and shootout.

Everything I said about the cameras on and around that hotel and on all the surrounding roads stands.

There are ZERO legitimate reasons as to
why the gaurds could not have followed his footsteps from the door of the hotel to wherever he walked to.

Check out the statement regarding that article on the Jon Jonsson missing Facebook page. Apparently it is a load of rubbish, and his family and the authorities know nothing about it.

Traffic cameras in Dublin are live feed only, they don't record.

    .

Do we know that the Gardai didn't look at all available footage?

People put a lot of faith in CCTV, and it certainly can be of great use. But it's not as ubiquitous at people think, individual cameras can often be offline, objects can obscure the view and footage can be of very poor quality. So it's not always the perfect, omnipresent observer people suppose it to be.

  • "murdered by accident" by someone skilled enough to make the body disappear into thin air.

    Very strange altogether.

It's difficult to make a body disappear. Even more difficult in a foreign country like this Icelandic criminal was. Dosnt make sense
