feel half daft posting this however I said I would see what people think that have experiences with this type of thing

Basically I am living with my wife and daughter in our house for the past two years now, the house was originally my aunts whom i was very close with, she sadly passed away earlier in the year from coronavirus. The house we live in is not your typical house as it’s almost 200 years old.

Now onto whats been going on lately, in the last few weeks particularly, I have been in my own room working from home and have heard what can only be described as breathing which feels very close to me, last week I was particularly sick and went to bed early could not sleep and then again I hear this breathing really close to me, I was wide awake, I thought it was odd but shrugged it off. Now I should state I have on the odd occasion thought i heard this same sound last year also. I did not mention it to my wife as she is the last person in the world to believe anything supernatural, I’d be also sceptical but am more open minded ..

Now, onto this week, I went to bed at approximately 11.30, our daughter who is one and sleeps in our room was fast asleep, I drifted off and awoke to my wife screaming and shaking me, I woke choking and gasping for air, I felt like I had been asleep for hours however it was just after 12, I asked my wife what the hell was going on, she said that she was awake and about to go asleep when she saw a black shadow like figure standing over our bed which then moved towards me, she screamed and shook me to wake, I didn’t see anything just woke choking which was a very jarring sensation to say the least! I said you must of been dreaming but she is adamant that she was wide awake

Since then she’s been quite rattled, I’m not sure what to do here, I’m not a very religious person but should I get the house blessed?

    Thanks for any input

I really have no advice to offer but if you feel you may get some benefit from a blessing, then go with it, I do know of someone who bought a house recently , it is an old house and the children see a spirit, the adults don't but can feel a presence within the house, they don't seem to be afraid of it, more fascinated by it, one child is 4 and other is 16, both can see the spirit,

Bit of a no win situation , if you do nothing you're ignoring your wife's fears ,
If you have a big blessing , youre reinforcing those fears and accepting that they're real ,
First thing is reassure your wife .... There's usually an explanation , mightnt be a good one though ...
You choking is probably from being woken from a deep sleep ..
For there to be a shadow there needs to be a light source , night light ,phone in the room lighting up , partly open curtains and a cars light miles away , it's surprising where light can come from ,
Move the night light , close curtains properly ect ect ,
If your wife is religious ,have a little blessing , if she's not but kinda spiritual similar ,get a sage bundle or incense and burn it ,say a few reassuring words ,
But keep it low key ... if you ask around youre sure to get some bull**** storey , especially since your house is nearly 2 centuries old ,how many generations have lived and died in that house, which is reasonable...
The breathing one youre on your own with though ..
    Good luck

Meant to say , if it helps and you are doing a personal blessing thingy , just have some kind of fare well to your aunt's memories in the house , you'and your wife will probably both think it's B S. . BUT you got on well with your aunt , so it could still be a nice thing to do , and bring a close ... But mainly find the light source ...

you might find it tricky to get a Priest to come out - you could start by ringing the pariah office and asking them for a pint bottle of
holy water - pick it up down to the Church and
sprinkle it all over the room. Might be a good
    start.

    Small spelling error corrected...

    Yes a good idea.

There are in every diocese priests who specialise in this ministry and they will know.

Also priests like drs etc can visit if they wear PPE as they need to come for eg Last Rites and Sick Visits.

Any church will have Holy Water freely available either in the Church or close outside. Go in and have a look?

personally i wouldnt rush to get a priest in. Theres either something or theres nothing there but I have had my own experiences so Im open tot he idea that such things can happen.

In my last house - which I had lived in for 20 years until I sold it - , I could have made the choice to get a priest in and bless the place. Yet whatever was in my house was pretty harmless so Im glad I didnt. It made noises and at the start had been shaking beds and generally scaring the crap out of the household but at the end of the day, once we recognised it existed, all we'd hear would be sounds of things moving, or books dropping, windows opening etc et. everyday stuff, that if you forgot wasnt being created by anyone in the house, wasnt so abnormal at all.

Theres no need for fear i think. My suggestion is break out a camera or two ... things tend to happen less often when theres a camera about, plus it keeps your mind occupied and acts as a concept of defence for your family. Im in two minds though if its something ghostly paranormal - like poltergiests etc - or something mentally paranormal, like the subconsious mind creating havoc within the physical world.

Fascinating post OP and I have experienced similar things myself in the past.

It sounds probable to me that there is some kind of entity or spirit, or set of entities, that are attracted to you or your wife on an energetic level. My experiences have led me to believe that there are indeed malignant phenomena out there, all around us, pretty much all of the time, but that they are essentially powerless unless you surrender to the fear, or sign some form of contract.

My belief is that the world is a whole lot stranger than we acknowledge on an everyday basis, and that these entities are attracted to more open minded souls. Even if the door in your mind is only open by a fraction, these creatures will see the light and be attracted to it, so it is a blessing that you are able to perceive them in the first place, but also a curse in that you will need to overcome the fear that comes in the wake of having your day to day assumptions about the physical universe compromised.

I would suggest instead of running from it or trying to rationalise it, pay close attention in your daily life, and look out for any strange synchronicities, auditory phenomenon or uncanny feelings.

If it was me I would not be thinking of getting the house blessed, and if you are not religious I think this would be a very bad move.

Try to be receptive to your environment and learn from the experience. Who knows what will happen?

Edit: Also, and more hopefully, there is a very good chance that this is not one of the aforementioned spirits, but
actually your dead aunt, either in the form of residual energy, or perhaps she has come back to communicate with you.

Were you close? What kind of character was she?

Hi Bibblybobbly and thanks for the post.

There are many down to earth reasons that can explain shadows and 'entities' in experiences like this, I would refrain from jumping to the 'its a spirit' explanation. The first thing to do is to talk to your wife and both be honest with each other to anything you've experienced or seen around the property, this way it will make you both feel a bit at ease that your not on your own with what you've both experienced and it will give a sense of your both in this together and not on your own.

I would first try to rule out stress due to your wife's aunts recent passing. Stress can be a very powerful force when not dealt with, it can cause audio and visual hallucinations so I would suggest first going to see your GP/medical pactitioner to deal with any possible stress, it's very possible to be under stress without even realising it.

On the possibility of stress, stress has been linked to sleep paralysis also known as "Old hag" syndrome. Sleep paralysis comes in many shapes and sizes, its very possible this is what your wife experienced. Again, you'll need to talk to your GP to deal with any underlying stress or anxiety.

With regard to the breathing sounds you've experienced, is there a vent in the windows that could cause a draft which in turn could cause a 'breathing' sound? Older houses have fixed vents on the frames and even older houses tend to have a lot of gaps or crevasses around windows that could lead to a draft that could cause the breathing sound.

Like maccored said, if you can set up a camera to record the room at night, any activity seems to always calm down when a camera is recording for whatever reason, maybe even look at using a sleeping app on both you and your wife's phone that records at night to see what your sleep patterns are like and if there are any patterns in sleep during the night.

Either way the main thing to do is to relax, don't jump to any conclusions, rule out stress due to the recent passing of a family member by talking to a GP/medical professional about possible stress and once that is all dealt with look at the camera and try and write down any occurrences, date, time, location and short descriptions of what happened. Over time you might find patterns that will lead to a down to earth cause.

A lot of Paranormal occcurrences don't fall into the category of logical and are often explained away in an Illogical manner,,i.e The very close breathing sound while wide awake explained as a draught.
There is sight, sound and touch/pressure in these experiences by two different people so I would put it in the category of a real paranormal event and not in any way logical.
My advice is try to learn to live this and not get excited or afraid as emotions will fuel this occurrence. These phenomenon cant cause physical harm so you are safe. We have a lot more to learn about this side of the human experience.

So your wife believes something was in your room moving towards you and you wake up choking....but shur we will stay in the house and have the baby in the room with the strangler ghost...sounds like a good plan

I also loved this section of a reply "My suggestion is break out a camera or two ... things tend to happen less often when theres a camera about"

It's like a disclaimer you would see on one of the many ghost hunting shows, loads of ghosts but they don't like being on camera, suppose they are self conscious.

To give an update on this, and thank you to everyone for their input, I got holy water and blessed the rooms myself as couldn’t get a priest to call out, since this has happened all i can say is we have had extremely bad luck in day to day life and one death of a very close relative, it’s been a tough time but obviously cannot say any of this is related.

I haven’t set up a camera as of yet. Things were settling down and then one day last week as my wife was downstairs with our daughter I was in the room alone and boom the lightbulb which was off exploded into pieces above my head, to say i jumped is an understatement! I am just thankful my daughter was not in the room. Again I cannot say it’s related at all but it is unnerving. We are renovating a different room in the house and probably will set that up as the future bedroom and leave the current one as a store room.

Finally, I didn’t mention this in my previous post but before this room became our bedroom it was always closed as my aunt never used it. Approx last year/two years ago I was alone in the house and entered the room and was surprised to find a black bird sitting inside on the window ledge, windows closed, doors closed etc, I’m still baffled as to how it got in. Again highly likely it’s unconnected but thought i should mention it in case things like that are a symbol of something.

    Thanks again for the input.

With regard to the lightbulb, you'd be surprised how common light bulbs exploding are, and its most always down to a faulty bulb, I wouldn't jump to associating this with the other experiences you have described to date.

  • Registered Users Posts: 32,940 ✭✭✭✭NIMAN

Get in a team of researchers with recording equipment, cameras etc to sit in your house for a week and that'll get rid of this 'spirit'.

I think the problem is once you start to overthink the idea that you have a spirit in the house, you attach everything that might happen to being paranormal. Like the light bulb for example. People all round the country have light bulbs explode but they aren't putting it down to a ghost. You are blaming everything on it being a ghost and the more you continue to do that, the more you will see more things you find strange that probably have logical enough explanations.

The light bulb explosion is normal but just made scary by your past experience and the bad luck is also normal unfortunately. The black bird is odd but it got in there by itself as paranormal activity can not create a blackbird.

Nothing has happened since you blessed the house so keep that at the front of your mind.Keeping the room as a store is a very good idea and it's possible that your aunt saw something too and stopped using the room.Leave it be for a year and if you are brave enough try it as a bedroom again and you will have your answer then.

We had some strange goings on in our old house. There was things moved when we were in bed and we witnessed things moving in the same room as us. Usually accompanied by the smell of lavender. This all stopped when we told whoever or whatever it was they weren't welcome. We both felt silly doing it but it ended quickly after that.

    Worth a try.

My father died in his bed, he was sick and we had a relation who was a clergyman and after the funeral, he came back to the house and in the sitting room he put his hands up and asked for God's blessing to send dad on his way and bless the house. It gave us so much comfort and I for one felt so much more at ease in the house knowing that it had been blessed.

Yep, id agree, tell it to fook off and see if that makes a difference. i was haunted by a friend who passed young and suddenly, and after a few months i literally said out loud tell me what you want me to do for you or leave me alone. felt weird but had to be done and he stopped. still visits my dreams from time to time but not in a scary way

Why didn't you think to ask before it took that long?
Then you just scared him off. He's probably trapped somewhere with no one to help him.

The other thing I would look at the air your breathing. Since your house old enough perhaps you have some bacteria/fungus overgrowth like Toxic black mold or something in that nature. Hope it helps.
