I've just a had a PM conversation with a mod. In a PM i said that i thought posts by another user were backseat moderation. They then come back and say that i am backseat modding by saying that to a mod in PM. Can a CMOD or admin confirm to me that that is the case? If it is then anything i say to a mod about another users posts in a pm to that mod can be said to be backseat moderation.

I said advocating for another user to be punished by PM instead of via the report system is backseat modding. Dont misrepresent me please.

Now youll get told off for telling the contents of a PM exchange with a mod.

    :p

And please do not represent me. I never advocated for them to be punished. I said
They were engaged in active backseat moderation.

That is the extent of what i said in relation to backseat moderation.

It may be that describing your comments as "backseat modding" was not strictly correct, but it appears to me the sentiment was that rather than approaching the mod directly you should report a post. That's fair enough in my view - it allows all the mods, and indeed CMods, see the issue being raised, and input if they consider appropriate on any action to be taken

PM'ing the mod to make assertions about a user/post can certainly be seen as personalising things which a mod may consider undue pressure to act. In that sense you could be considered as having made your own mind up with an expectation the mod will agree with you. I can certainly see that as being considered akin to backseat modding

Bringing it back to basics though - the standard process is to report posts or posters you have an issue with and not seek to engage directly with mods on such matters. Other forum mods are not privy to such discussion and that could cause issues if, for example, one mod took a different view to another, but they were not given the opportunity to debate their respective positions which a reported post could allow

Of course the mod could report the discussion to other mods, but it's much more difficult under Boards rules to discuss things that are said via PM

Unsurprisingly you managed to find some way to agree with the mod despite initially saying it wasn't backseat moderation. Basically you saying i cannot discuss anything in relation to another poster via PM in case the mod i'm talking decides i am backseat modding. Just as an FYI my pm to the mod was in response to a mod action on a thread, it was not out of the blue. Please close the thread, I was foolish to open a thread on moderation in the first place.
