Bring some sunshine into your life and join one of Ireland’s leading jazz singers, Emilie Conway and her Quintet, in the National Concert Hall on May 4th for Estrada do Sol. Travel the sunny streets of Brazil through the evocative melodies and grooves of its music by some of its most brilliant composers including; Jobim, Powell, Buarque, Nascimento, Joyce and more New, classic arrangements and originals by the Quintet.

There is an irresistible beauty to the evocative melodies, the soft sound of the Portuguese language, and the gentle grooves of bossa nova from Brazil, one that is matched perfectly by a smooth and sultry delivery by Emilie, described by UK jazz vocalist Fionna Duncan as “a heart stealer with the voice of an angel.” Joined by some of the leading lights of the Irish jazz and world music scene, this concert delivers a unique programme celebrating the music from Brazil as well as the exquisite lyricism of Brazilian poets like Vincius de Moraes.

Emilie's most recent focus, a celebration of the life and work of writer and social diarist Maeve Brennan, which Conway performed in the hip Cornelia St Café in New York and was also well received in Ireland with a sell out concert last September at the National Concert Hall. Previously, Emilie also created a concert celebrating the life and music of Brail's legendary singer, Elis Regina.

In this new concert, Emilie is delighted to re-imagine and share this beautiful music with you, together with her long-time collaborator, pianist, Johnny Taylor, guitarist, Paddy Groenland, (Ensemble Eriu, West African group Manden Express, RiZa) Bassist Dave Mooney, (Gavin Friday, Sarah Brightman, Jeff Ramsey, Al Jarreau Group) and Brazilian drummer, Andre Antunes, (Loah, Republic of Loose, Sinead O Connor, Amy Winehouse, Edu Ribeiro, Leo Maia).

The second in a series of musician-curated gigs presented by The Dublin Jazz Co-op this week features ReDiviDeR. This two-horns-no-chords quartet was established by drummer Matthew Jacobson in 2007 as a creative outlet for his compositions as well as his somewhat perverse fascination with anagrams. While he failed to find such avid fellow followers of wordplays, he did find and enlist the help of improv and rhythmic specialists Derek Whyte (bass), Nick Roth (alto sax) and trombonist Colm O'Hara.

The band play all original compositions from Jacobson ('a European jazz artist of growing charisma' - the Guardian) with influences as diverse as Charles Mingus, the Books, Deerhoof and Tim Berne. The formula for putting all this together in one palindromic setting is downtown grooves with catchy riffs and collective improvs.

ReDiviDeR have recorded two albums for Diatribe, Ireland's leading record label for new sounds. 'Never odd or eveN' was released in November 2011 to a four-star review in the Irish Times and a 'one to watch out for' recommendation in All About Jazz. 'meets I Dig Monk, Tuned' was released in October 2013 and has been called 'an inspired endeavour' by No More Workhorse, 'a big leap forward' by Marlbank and 'a striking musical collage' recommended for those generally disposed to imaginative, genre-bending music' by All About Jazz.

The group have performed extensively across Ireland and the UK as well as touring and playing festivals in France, Italy and Sweden. Having taken a brief sabbatical from public performances over the last year, the group are now booking for 2018.

The Long Way Around, are dedicated to exploring the complex rhythmic language of contemporary jazz. The trio is has just recorded their first album containing the typical rhythmic legerdemain with which they have become synonymous in the Irish jazz scene – expect lots of rhythmic cut and thrust, off-kilter grooves and the place where the familiar collides with the new.

Chris Guilfoyle is an up and coming guitar player on the Dublin jazz scene. He has studied at Berklee College of Music - where he was awarded a scholarship from Fender Guitars and the Jazz and Improvised Music Salzburg conference in Austria. Chris was also selected to represent his college at the International Association of Schools of Jazz in The Netherlands in July 2010. In August 2011, Chris was accepted to study at Dave Liebman’s Chromatic Harmony Workshop in Stroudsburg Pennsylvania, USA, and later went on to obtain his Masters Degree from the Luzern Jazz School in Switzerland.

Since graduating, Chris has been actively performing in the Dublin music scene as well as abroad. Although young, he has already played with such jazz notables as Dave Liebman, Eric Ineke and Ralph Peterson and his band Umbra were selected to play at the prestigious ’12 Points’ Festival in 2015, and the Jazzy Colours Festival in Paris.

Ronan Guilfoyle is a bassist, composer and an acknowledged innovator in the area of rhythmic technique. He has toured extensively in Europe, Asia, and America, performing with such artists as Dave Liebman, Kenny Werner, Joe Lovano, Kenny Wheeler, Brad Mehldau, John Abercrombie, Benny Golson, and Jim McNeely. Ronan's book, "Creative Rhythmic Concepts for Jazz Improvisation", is now seen as the standard text for the teaching of advanced rhythmic techniques. He has taught this at many schools around the world including Berklee College of Music, The New School, and is an associate Artist of the Royal Academy of Music in London. As a composer he has written a vast body of work for both jazz and classical ensembles, from pieces for solo violin to three-movement works for symphony orchestra.

Matthew Jacobson is a drummer, composer, bandleader, educator and producer currently based Dublin. He completed his BA in Jazz Performance at Newpark Music Centre, Dublin in 2008 and in 2010 he received a Masters Degree in Music Performance from Lucerne University, Switzerland.

He has represented his country, touring with the European Jazz Orchestra in 2008 and performs regularly in Ireland and abroad. He is also a co-director of Diatribe Records, Ireland's leading record label for new sounds and the Irish co-producer of European exchange tour network and annual festival Match&Fuse. Since 2010, Matthew has been a member of faculty on Newpark Music Centre’s BA in Jazz Performance program, as both a drum tutor and ensemble leader.

Heard very rarely in Ireland, the ‘Jazz Mass’ is an exciting blend of jazz blues and choir. It has been performed over a hundred times around the world since its premiere and follows in the tradition of Dave Brubeck's jazz-tinged oratorios. It is uncompromising in its use of improvisation, syncopation and harmonies, with the choir at times used like a jazz soloist and at other times providing backing vocals for the soprano soloist. The traditional Latin text is given a dynamic 21st-century vibrancy as plainsong introductions progress through blues and swing to the final exuberant restatement of the Credo.
Programme also includes O Nata Lux de Lumine by Thomas Tallis and Devil's Trill Sonata by Giuseppe Tartini.
Ticket includes entry to a workshop led by Will Todd on 01.06.2018 at 7.30 in TCD.

An exceptional evening of music featuring the stunning vocals of Norma Winstone & award winning guitarist Tommy Halferty.

Norma Winstone was born in London and first attracted attention in the late sixties when she shared the bill at Ronnie Scott’s club with Roland Kirk. Although she was known initially for evolving her own wordless approach to improvisation, her extraordinary versatility means she is equally at home with the standards repertoire, performing with small groups, orchestras and big bands. Her own legendary album ‘Somewhere Called Home‘ on the ECM label is widely considered to be a classic.

Born in Derry, Northern Ireland, he began his musical career in the late 70s taking Jazz Guitar lessons with Louis Stewart, a world class jazz musician. He has travelled the world and played with Lee Konitz, Benny Golson, Ronnie Cuber, George Mraz, Dave Liebman, Martial Solal. He has been guest lecturer at the famous Berklee College of music Boston. Tommy is considered one of the first Irish jazz musicians to export a distinctly indigenous style to a more worldwide setting.

Bassist Barry Donohue leads ‘Plaza Real’, a band dedicated to playing the music of 70/80’s jazz fusion group Weather Report. This is a really exciting project for Barry, as it pays tribute to a very special moment in his life - the moment his father Frank gifting him with ‘Heavy Weather’, one of Weather Report’s most highly regarded albums, featuring Jaco Pastorius on electric bass. This album jarred and transformed thirteen-year-old Barry’s preconceptions of the role of the bass guitar in music. He is joined by good friends and exceptional musicians Chris Engel on soprano sax, Darragh O’Kelly on synths and many forms of the piano, Eamonn Cagney on percussion, and Shane O’Donovan on drums.

    Hello all!
Seems like a strange time to revive this thread but I’m wondering can anyone advise some good venues to catch some jazz and blues whenever the live music/ pub industry opens back up, which hopefully will be June/July 2021 or something.
We are in the dublin area.
