    Personal responsibility is important.

    From the article:
“The onus is on occupants themselves to have carbon monoxide alarms installed where refurbishment works have not yet taken place.”

    50 quid for an alarm

Could they have not bought one themselves to protect their own children?

You'd imagine any parent would. They were lucky.

Whoa whoa whoa boys. Those posts smack of the suggestion that people should be responsible for their own wellbeing.

    The very thought!!!!!

How are the family of.....10..... going to claim compensation if people are saying ridiculous stuff like 'they should have had an alarm'.

Well, we could say it's a help - they hear that and all 10 go into their best compo face!!!

6 people in one room with an open fire going, possibly with the door closed and insufficient ventilation, what could possibly go wrong.

Please show some sympathy.. it is a council property by the way. They should have done this.

    Have YOU all got them?

The council fitted one here when they redid the electrical system

Many don't associate monoxide with open fires though

The Council has advised the Sherlocks, for now, not to use the open fireplace at their home and instead use the oil burning system installed in the property.

To be fair I did not know such things existed before I came here last year. Never seen one before. But I am careful with doors and making sure air can get it. dratted kitchen windows make sure of that too .

You can get non-wired ones for as low as €20. No excuse. It is absolutely the responsibility of the householder/parent to make sure he has a carbon monoxide detector wherever fuel is burned.

    Please read the article again:
A spokesman for Clare Co Council said that Carbon Monoxide alarms are installed in all Council properties undergoing refurbishment workings.

    ...like your home, for example.
However, the spokesman added: “The onus is on occupants themselves to have carbon monoxide alarms installed where refurbishment works have not yet taken place.

    Like their home.

They had a close call, yes, but living in a council owned property doesn't negate personal responsibility either.

    Five of them

Four interconnected with battery backups and one a separate brand for redundancy in the most likely location.

Smoke alarms in every room including the attic where there’s wiring and a comms press. Four of these are interconnected also.

*not in a council house so nobody buying them for me.

    Sorry but no,

Did you see the picture, nice enough house well looked after. They use an open fire place to heat rooms they should put a bloody smoke and Monoxide alarm in.

Blaming the council for everything is ridiculous.

If you are using the fire place like this then yes monoxide alarms should be fitted.

    Its personal responsibility.

We could just sent the council out to block up all the fire places, is that a better option? Save people from themselves and all that.........

Any houseowner or new houseowner should be safety aware foremost and should educate themselves in case of accident.
It's a basic requirement, carbon smoke heat alarms, fire extinguisher, blanket, decent first aid kit.

    Kids in school uniform- check
Sad faces at the ready- check
    Blame everyone else- check

Wonder if they'll claim the house is uninhabitable now, maybe they need one with more bedrooms, and room for a trampoline.

Imagine the amount of welfare they're getting, sure they'd leave poor Margaret Cash in the ha'penny place.

But can't afford a tenner for a CO alarm ?

Please make sure you have the alarms. They call it the silent killer. Council negligence again

These people are morons. But it is no harm to run this sort of article heading into the Winter to remind people that this can happen.

If this article gets people to check if they have an alarm and to test their alarm then it's doing a great job.
