Awful result on so many levels. We need PNG to lose or have a rained game whilst we win everything else.

There can be no excuses not to finish top of this group.

Do only the top teams qualify for the next stage, or what is the system?

Group winners go through to World Cup and onto the semi finals of this.

2nd and 3rd in each group will play each other with the winners going onto the semi final and losers going onto loser semi final along with 4th from each group

The 4th team in each group and 2 losers then play with those two winners going into a 5th place play off.

Basically the 4 semi finalist and the two teams in the 5th place play off will go to the World Cup

Poor batting effort so far, 93/4. Need 37 off 24 when in reality it should've been much easier than this,

Yeah it's starting to look a lot tougher than I thought it would be

    In serious trouble here

40 balls for 28. Not good by the captain. 105/5

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,725 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

A bit of a shambles this

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭Cricket fan

    Abysmal

  • Registered Users Posts: 10,725 ✭✭✭✭Pudsy33

What does this mean for our chances of getting to the knockouts?

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭Cricket fan

    Absolutely inexcusable.

We win vs Jersey we're through. We've made a balls of this group though, and Group B looks very tough, If we cant beat PNG and HK I dont back us against Scotland/Netherlands or Afghanistan.

    Need a miracle here

    Can't blame Dockers for that

    All up to Mooney here

Overall one of the worst batting displays we've produced in a long time.

No disrespect to HK but to fall short chasing 129 at home is inexcusable. Now we have the lottery of a knock out game vs one of Holland,Scotland and maybe even Afghanistan.

    Dreadful day

Shocking stuff, thank god Jersey are terrible or we would probably be looking at an exit. Never should have lost from the platform Stirling made

edit: Just see Jersey beat HK earlier, but still they got hammered today by Namibia

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭Cricket fan

Our high score in this tournament is 140 vs the US,

vs Namibia we chased 120, we chased 50 vs Nepal and set PNG 123. Then today we made 125.

Pitches might be bowler friendly but they arent so tough that over a run a ball is impossible, and our opening partnerships havent clicked once yet

    Very very worrying times,

Not to mention we were hammered by Scotland just before this too

Just about caught up on this unbelievable news. Where were the weaknesses? WTF went on?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 12,621 Mod ✭✭✭✭riffmongous

A lot of dotballs, some guys didnt seem to be able to get bat on ball at all at the end. Porterfield with 28 from 40, although in fairness it was fine as long as Stirling was with him getting the boundaries.

Jersey beat Nepal today, so if Namibia beat PNG and HK beast USA, then Ireland vs Jersey is a straight knockout game, who'd have thought it could come down to that

It really isn't though sadly from our captain and a guy who has played so much international cricket and natwest blast cricket in England, love him to bits but it was a match losing innings.:(

Wouldn't panic too much, of all formats t20 is the most volatile. Just like back in the odi world cup earlier this year it appears this forum hasn't lost its over reactionary nature unfortunately.

Namibia building a nice score v PNG at the moment

We've lost two game to ****e teams. I don't think being upset is reactionary

We should still beat Jersey regardless of our recent woes, though they do have some dangerous batsmen. Also HK's RR is much worse than ours

Group B is pretty much done, Kenya ao for 97 vs Netherlands, so.....

if Netherlands win in under 8 overs they finish 1st, Scotland 2nd and Afghanistan 3rd. Oman will be 4th.

If Netherlands dont win in under 8 overs Scotland come top, Netherlands 2nd and Afghanistan 3rd, Oman 4th.

If Netherlands somehow lose Kenya finish 1st,Scotland 2nd and Afghanistan 3rd with Oman 4th.

Assuming we beat Jersey in the morning, Namibia as looks likely beat PNG and HK beat USA in todays games that'd leave the group as

    Ireland 8
PNG 7 (with one game left
    Namibia 7 (one game left)
    HK 7 (one game left)
    Jersey
    Nepal
    USA

Plus side is HK and Namibia play each other, so one will have to drop points (maybe both if rain comes into play).

All outcomes are open. We lose to Jersey we're probably out altogether. Most likely outcome is a 3rd place finish as PNG should beat USA and HK/Nam should pick up a win since they play eachother. In that case we will most likely play Scotland or the Dutch, depending on the Dutch run chase.

In order for us to come 1st we'd need an almighty mountain of luck it must be said.

We'll need PNG to lose today to Namibia and to the US tomorrow (or have the game rained off), HK to lose to the US today, us to beat Jersey, HK to beat Namibia tomorrow. In that case I think the group would be

    Ire 8
    PNG 7
    HK 7
    Namibia 7
    USA 7

Sorry if its confusing, trying to look at all outcomes here

To be fair, PNG won based on one freak innings and are a useful team, while HK beat Bangladesh last year.

That doesnt excuse the losses mind you, but I wouldnt call them crap teams, and on low scoring surfaces one freak innings defines a game.

Of course if PNG win today everything else I've written can be forgotten about, in that case we'll be playing for 2nd/3rd

  • Registered Users Posts: 395 ✭✭Cricket fan

Just out of curiosity, out of Netherlands/Scotland/Afghanistan who would you rather face?

For me probably the Dutch, without Malik their bowling aint that great, and they rely heavily on Myburgh and Cooper. But we thought that i 2014 too....

Scotland though always bottle pressure games, but have a very dangerous batting line up plus Evans and Davey are good bowlers.

Afghanistan we all know, can be fantastic one day atrocious the next, their bowling has struggles somewhat though, but its still the fastest in the competition

Doesn't look like they're going anywhere - 105/7 chasing 181 and needing 14+ runs an over.........
