    Did the big bang break the matter can never be created or destroyed rule ? was all the stuff in the universe already there but just squashed up real small ? or was matter actually created

    Theres a new theory that universes can arise spontaneously from existing ones. Its based on the fact that on one side of the sky cosmic microwave radiation is 10% stronger or something to that effect. So basically a universe could just randomly arise out of this one without us knowing about it and inherit the some of the properties of this universe. Can't find the link but its on the bbc website.

    @MooseJam

    All matter and energy of the observable universe was concentrated in one point of infinite density, the singularity.
    The laws of science break down at the singularity preventing us from looking further back in time.

    Is bit true that current inflationary theories need less that a gram of matter to get the universe started and the rest of the matter may have come about as a result of the initial expansion. But this is not in violation of the first law because it involves creating energy from the repulsive gravity that drove the expansion and it all balanced out somehow.

    I got just a little confused at about this point ;). Physics is hard :).
