Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

What colour for wooden gate

    This isn't woodcraft per se, but also isn't interior design so don't want to post in the other forum.

    I have a wooden entrance gate to my house. Standard enough design, one each side, maybe 12ft/14ft across in total.

    I have had it unpainted/unstained for maybe 2 or 3 years now, and would like to do it.

    Thing is, my front door and the 3 bar ranch style fence around the front of the house are black. I think if I did the gate black too it might be a little too much.

    So I was thinking of staining it, but not sure which would suit?
    Darker like walnut or lighter?

    What material is the gate made from. What wood?

    Few woods could remain un painted/untreated for 3 years, and

    be ready for paint without a lot of prepping first

    I'd go with black tbh. My own side gate is painted black and it looks tidy.

    Dark oak is a nice colour on timber gates

    Try staining instead of painting since the stains scale less over time. The oil based stains are better but rarer and also messier than your water based emulsions. Hard to say about color without seeing the whole house.
