    .
Borax dissolved in warm water is a very effective and safe preservative.
as long as you are not planning on having kids.

Borax was added to the Substance of Very High Concern (SVHC) candidate list on 16 December 2010. The SVHC candidate list is part of the EU Regulations on the Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals 2006 (REACH), and the addition was based on the revised classification of borax as toxic for reproduction category

Thanks guys. Got good advice from the lads in the diy close by. Can't remember the name of the product but sounds perfect for my needs. Will post up name when I buy it next week.

I didn't ask about how harmful it might be but will ask now next week

Thanks for the heads up about Borax. I wasnt aware of this. I have been using it for years on outdoor projects but I always seal the surface of the wood after treatment to prevent leaching and skin contact. Ill have to read up on it before using it again.
