    Quick Question,

I had the Oculus Rift and had to sell it due to a foot injury, I also have the Gear VR, I have a Samsung S8 with a slight crack in the screen. At the moment it would not be worth sending my phone away for repair as the crack is so small for normal phone use but not for VR.

Would it be worth picking up the Oculus Go or should I just send my phone away to be repaired? I will be in the US for Black Friday and 2 weeks after that so I can get it at a discounted price compared to Ireland. I bought the rift in the US during Black Friday for $300 I managed to sell it for €300 so im not too worried about losing money on it)

Do you use the phone just for VR?

I guess the main benefit of Oculus Go is that it's a "ready to go" VR experience. No plugging in phone into a headset, no starting apps on the phone etc etc.

These are minor barriers, but any friction like that just makes it less appealing to get into VR sessions, whereas the Oculus Go is literally "pick up and play" since there's no load times. Just stick on the headset and enter VR.

It's great for 10-15 min sessions when you don't have the time to commit to setting up your playspace, or waiting for computer/apps to load.

Also leaves your phone free for normal use, and doesn't overheat the phone.

Mostly for photography, I have captured some great pics with it. One of them won the Irish Examiner Amateur pic of the week.

I might just pick up the Oculus Go, Not wires and setting up a play space appeals to me.

yeah the no wires thing is amazing, you don't realise how great it is until you try it.

I literally just plop down on the couch, grab the headset as I would my phone and am instantly in VR.

Santa Cruz is going to be a game changer.

I’m a bit sceptical about the Santa Cruz. I think it's promising more than it can deliver, which is basically a wireless, all in one, high end, semi-affordable, out of the box VR product. I'm thinking it will be just a slighter improved version of the Go, (which I have yet to still try).

I was thinking of buying the rift or vivi next month when I'm in the US. However with the santa cruz coming in Q1 2019 I'm wondering if I should.
The problem is there's feck all known about it except that it'll be wireless.

    Just reading this. https://www.roadtovr.com/oculus-santa-cruz-release-date-price-specs-everything-we-know/

There's a oculus conference this month and they're expecting to hear more there.

Just get the current technology and enjoy it rather than constantly waiting for the next big thing.

There will always be new technology on the horizon and if you are always waiting for the next iteration you'll never jump on board.

Note, it is possible to get wireless on a Vive/Rift using a 3rd party solution. You still need the PC to run it though, that's going to be the difference with Santa Cuz and encourage major adoption.

Not to mention the main benefit of Santa Cruz (and Oculus Go) over the Rift, apart from the wireless aspect: ALL software will run on it perfectly.

The Rift/Vive are still limited by the fact that they require a PC to power them, so some people will not get the full experience, or even be able to run the games if their system isn't up to scratch.
Santa Cruz will have the same benefits that consoles have, in that everything will work on it.

Looking good... can I get another headset?

In other news, I tried the Oculus Go in bed last night and it's perfect for this use. I played Daedalus and floating around while propped under the covers felt surreal and really really cool.

Also watched a bit of Skybox. I reckon this will be a common use of my Go going forward, it's great in the sack ;)

The new oculus is going to be using a mobile processor (the same processor as the S8) so it's hard to see how it's going to be as good as a rift. The rift used a PC's graphics card , I can't see the Quest having similar hardware.

I don't think they plan to make it as good as the Rift as they have always said that is the premium level market.

It's supposed to be a middle-ground between the Go and the Rift.

Portable VR, with 6DoF and no cables, but the software will obviously need to be optimised for the device, as they say Robo Recall will be available for it, so I'd wager it will be a slimmed down version.

Saying that though, the possibilities of literally being able to run around the VR world is an amazing prospect

Interesting to note that it's Oculus Go Walmart is using for their massive (1 million employees) VR training programme -

    Hi,

I'm interested in trying out VR. Only ever tried a samsung headset with a crap Iphone inserted. Don't have money or a beefy enough PC for the Rift.

Would the GO be worth the money for things like watching netflix, you tube etc and some casual gaming ?

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,618 ✭✭✭✭mrcheez

    Yup it's pretty fantastic

Worth noting that YouTubeVR is available for Oculus Go now. If you live in an area of poor broadband, as do I, you'll appreciate the ability to download (higher quality) videos for offline playback.

is that only with a subscription or you can download with the free version?

    Haven't tried it yet

  • Registered Users Posts: 143 ✭✭Conba

Oops, sorry, I should have specified that's with the subscription. Well worth paying for me or else I'd have to give up on 360 / 180 video entirely.

well yeah I've got ****loads of Three credit to use up.

I don't watch videos on my phone that much so YouTube premium didn't make sense for me, but it might be good for Go usage and can pay for it using my credit.

So bit the bullet and have a GO on the way. Looking forward to giving it a whirl. Any tips or tricks on how to get the best out of it ? My PC is ok for my demanding gaming needs, i'm kinda looking at it as a more immersive media tool. Netflix, youtube etc. and the odd casual game. Any apps I need to know about ?

    Thanks.

Wander is brilliant. Essentially like travelling the planet from the comfort of your couch.

A great game that shows off the visual capabilities is Daedalus, really enjoyed that one. Dreadhalls is also superb, though not for the graphics. There's a free demo you can try. Play it on a swivel chair for the ultimate experience.

    Ultrawings is also excellent.

Skybox is my personal favourite video player as it can stream content from your PC, but there are other options coming along.

Also whatever your thoughts are on pr0n, it really does need to be experienced ;) ... SKybox is great for that too.

Thanks for the recommendations. I like the idea of Wander .Have a swivel chair ! As for the pr0n I wouldn't be at all at all at all interested in the likes of that........at all at all. ;-)

I gave it a go. It had to be done. It's weird. At one point a woman aggressively shoved her breasts at the camera and I found myself leaning back thinking they were going to hit me.

There's a few sites where you can stream it from. One of the sites even had female centric porn. As in you are in the womans place.

Incidentally, I wrote an assignment on porn in college. It was for marketing. The porn industry is always the first to hop on new technology. Within a few years of the camera being invented they were selling nude photo's. Porn is even part of the reason that VHS beat betamax and pornographers created the first video libraries where you could rent video's. They created the first online checkout and the first livestream on the web.

    Hey lads and lasses,

Just looking for a bit of advice. I’m looking for Xmas present ideas for my brother, and he really loved his PSVR.

Is there really much point getting a Go if he already has the PSVR? The obvious difference is the mobility, but with way less controls for games? What’s the selection of games like?

    Thanks :)

I have both and use both interchangeably. Different types of games and Go is better for video watching etc, so lots of scope to use both at different times.

Go is also portable so handy for when he's away and misses his VR fix.
