I know a five year old called Betty

Betty is a name I always associate with elderly women. I blame Betty (Hotpot) in Corrie :D

Thomasina. How could you do that to your newborn daughter?
Nigella Lawson had a sister called Thomasina. Nigella is a pretty unusual name too in fairness..

Aye, very popular years ago, along with Sinead & Niamh.

Gone out of favour with the Geolscoil types now.

They want something more 'distincive' now.

Read, More hard to spell & pronounce than ever..

    Dicks...

Pretty much everyone I grew up with had Irish names. It's so strange to see how people consider it pretentious nowadays because all the yummy rugger mummy types hijacked their own culture.

Yeah - but the names you grew up with were Sean Aoife Sinead etc. You didnt have a Siopadoireacht or Cairead or Ispini in your class did ya???

Not a fan of the name "Edwina".

The name Daniel has been passed down to the eldest son on my dads side for 5 generations alternating between Daniel and Dónal to tell us apart. I even have the same middle name as my grandad. My brother is called Eoghan, love seeing non-Irish speakers attempting that :D

Personally, I hate the name Jacinta.

I love the name Daniel (as in Daniel Craig not Daniel O'Donnell :D) but I don't like Danny or Dan etc...

What's so bad about that ?

Sure was! Not seen now much though...

I don't mind Irish names, such as Sean or Tara.

    Theyr'e quite nice.

Some of the stuff they dredge up can be quite cringemaking though.

I'm glad that my name (Chris) travels well in English speaking countries throughout the world.

None of this 'how do you spell that?' or 'what does that mean?' type shoite I've seen with friends travelling over the years.

My grandson is called Daniel and I call him Dan. It's a strong name and he is a lovely chatty good natured lad of 7 years and I am very proud of him. He is my wee man.

Daniel has been among the most popular names in Ireland for many years now.

    Ireland
    (2010)
Jack, Seán, Daniel, James, Conor, Ryan, Adam, Alex, Luke, Dylan

I am wondering when people around Ireland and the UK will tire of calling their new boys Jack. There's going to be so many Jack's in schools in the coming years that dozens will turn round in the playground when they hear "JACK".

    Nice one.

If/when I have a kid (who would have to be a boy, considering the name) he will be called naoise (my favourite name from Irish but also doubles for my love of Nietzsche)
