It;s all about the balls, graded and colour coded for speed. How you have your racket strung... Then the fitness and skill, speed and endurance. Ohh and stamina.

The ball mustn't bouce more than once. The ideal, into the corner, it kills the ball. LOL if the oppenent is a bad loser, get ready for some bad strokes that canaccidently hit you. You can become the target for the ball if you are too far forward...

if you want to get serious... abbreviated rules

    http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/RulesAbbreviated.pdf

    Balls

Super slow - Yellow Dot (Single or Double) Slow - White Dot or Green Dot Medium - Red Dot Fast - Blue Dot Page

3 3. Balls which are used at World Championships or at similar standards of play must meet the above specifications for the Standard Double Dot (Competition) ball.

With only 60 affiliated clubs in all of Ireland, I feel that tug of war is a sport which deserves a far greater amount of attention than it gets. Anyone who's watched two well matched and well trained teams pulling will agree that it's utterly captivating. Falls to the wayside against the Gaelic games, unfortunately. Something different, at very least :)

Probably the toughest sport I've competed in. I love it.

I pulled against the Israeli Defense Forces in their Olympic training village at Wingate Uni, Netanya. Israel in 2001 ~ we won

    1964%20Anton%20Geesink.jpg

Anton Geesink winning the 1964 Olympic Gold medal in Judo.

Realizing what the defeat would mean to his opponent and to Japan (the '64 Olympic's hosts) Geesink raises his hand and asks for his supporters not to celebrate his win.

Akio Kaminaga, his opponent was shunned by some in Japanese society when he refused to commit Harakiri.

I was pulling until recently, but the summer schedule of training and Sundays away didn't suit with changes at work :(

Like you said, it's definitely one of the toughest sports going. It'd be great if it became more popular here.

As the title suggests please pop a few sports related pics in here.

The good thing about this thread, it's sports related... a very broad aspect to the World of S[prt. The previous 7 pages show the great difference... Rugby, football, motor racing, fencing, Winter olympics... The political aspect, stretching across Europe and the Mexico games...

You need a broad receptive attitude to appreciate the contributions and the rewuest for further explanations , hopefully, brings a greater understanding for all the sports illustrated within the thread.

Ohh, Bucs are Tampa Bay buccaneers... US gris irin team.

Not fan of most US sports but this guy was voted best sportsman of the 20th century in some polls.

    It is Jim Thorpe.
    1912 Olympics
    Pentathlon Gold
    decathlon Gold
    Long Jump 7th
    high Jump 4th

These medals were taken off him because he had played some professional baseball.

After this he played professional baseball for NY Giants, Chicago White Soxs
He played professional football before NFL was founded.
    He played professional basketball.

BTW this is 1912 Olympics pic and he is wearing two different shoes and socks because someone stole his own and he found these discarded in rubbish.
They were different sizes so had multiple socks in one.

^Amazing character, his wikipedia entry is fascinating.

And Jim Thorpe was the guy that bet Mayo's finest athlete's record in the decathlon in the US.

Martin Sheridan won 5 (or 3 if you discount 06) Olympic golds, 9 (4 if you discount 06) Olympic medals in total.
He won Discus Gold in 04, 06 and 08.
Greek Discus Gold in 08 and Shotput gold in 06.

In 1988 he was inducted into the USA Track & Field hall of fame.
    Bohola's finest.

1906 Intercalcated Games in Athens is not officially an Olympics, but recognised as such by some.

I love the way he keeps the old socks up and that if he steps back he gets a sholve in the ar**. :)
    And athletes complain today.

The Winter OLympics don't seem to enjoy the same blaze of pub;ivity as the summer but, this guy, :

    sochi-2014-15.jpg

Ole Einar Bjørndalen (born 27 January 1974) is a Norwegian professional biathlete, often referred to by the nickname "The King of Biathlon". He is the most medaled Olympian in the history of the Winter Olympic Games, with 13 medals. He is also the most successful biathlete of all time at the Biathlon World Championships, having won 40 medals, double that of any other biathlete.

He's been posted before but I think this interview is really fantastic. Took so much guts for him to go out and compete

  • Registered Users Posts: 9,672 ✭✭✭Oblomov

Apparently, 15 year old, Ashleigh Pittaway, is quoted as saying, she has been training for FOUR years to get to this stage..... Since 11?????

    That is dedication and motivation.

    LOL

NNooo on yur stomach... sliding thro rock hard ice grove. using body weight and toes to stay on the best line... and a bob no bogger than a medium sized tray.....

OOHH, and at speed over 80mph....

    The official def:

Skeleton is a fast winter sliding sport in which a person rides a small sled down a frozen track while lying face down (prone), during which the rider experiences forces up to 5 g and reaches speeds over 130 km/h (80 mph).

Now, if that young lady had balls, they would be tooo big for your hands.

Oblomov haven't you figured it out yet ?

Some people reckon the definition of sport is one where you chase round the place or end up in a sweat.

Then when you tell them that guys like racing/rally drivers sweat buckets you are told it is not a sport because they are sitting.

Then the argument is it is not a sport because it depends on some form of mechanical device.

Some would not see skeleton, luge ore bobsled as sports since "shure isn't only sitting or lying there and gravity does the rest".
