From Guinness Book of Records 1997 page 206
The Human World - Worst Disasters
    Worst deliberate dam burst
    Guomindang forces fighting the Japanese
dynamited the Yantze Jiang dam at Huayuan
Koa, China, in April 1938, Killing 890,000.

Anyone got more info on this ?

This is nearly an order of magnitude worse than the worst air raids / atomic bombings - and this it the only reference I can find about it. It proves beyond a doubt the phrase "mans imhumanity to man" and serves as a warning that even before the atomic era people were quite capable of acts that SiFi writers predicted would not occur because of backlash against the perpetrators.

Stalin is attributed with a quote "The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of a million is a statistic."
