I know a pitiful amount about the cold war and I'd like some book recommendations on the subject. A kind if general history of the topic.

One of the classics of this period is John Lewis Gaddis' "The Cold War". The authors tilts towards the Western side but overall very readable.
For a work that dwells on the numerous hot wars of the period I'd recommend Michael Burleigh's "Small wars in far away places".
For a pivot moment in that period, there is Michael Dobb's "Minutes to Midnight" on the Cuban missile crisis, which uses Soviet era archives to show how close it came to WWIII.
