    Statement of purpose:

The Comics Forum is a community board for sharing ideas and thoughts about all things comic-related - whether you want to discuss what you're reading at the moment, get suggestions/reviews, share links and websites, or talk about adaptations of comics into other media. The Comic Production Forum exists as a sub-forum for the discussion of everything connected to the creation of comics.

Please note that this is NOT a forum for discussion of stand-up comics - there is a separate forum here for all things comedy-related.

    General rules:

No spam, porn, abuse, trolling, baiting, flaming or general muppetry. The making of potentially defamatory, off topic, disruptive statements such as incitement of hatred, racism, sexism or violence is subject to alteration or deletion. Repeat offenders may be banned; subsequent unbannings are also at the discretion of the moderators.

Absolutely NO discussion of or links relating to illegally downloading comics is allowed, nor is discussion of the methods and channels by which they can be downloaded. Discussion of fan communities like scans_daily is allowed within reason, though when discussing the contents of past or upcoming comics only links to material hosted on legitimate news/PR sites like Comic Book Resources or Newsarama or publishers' own sites are allowed.

    Advertising & promotional posts:

Commercial advertising, and the overt promotion of commercial activity on boards.ie are forbidden under the site's general rules. If you want to post about a comics-related event with a commercial aspect (eg events organised by or heavily sponsored by a commercial company) then you may do so in this thread after securing approval from a moderator.

If you want to promote your comic/website, the best way to do so is to include a link or relevant information in your sig. You may also want to post the link in the Recommended webcomics or Resources threads. New threads specifically intended to promote your new comic/website are generally frowned upon if they do not also include material for discussion (eg preview material which posters can comment on). Repeatedly posting in your own thread ("bumping") is also frowned upon. Please bear in mind that you will be expected to be an active forum member if you wish to use boards.ie as a way of bringing attention to your comic/website - this means regularly contributing to discussions that have no connection to your own work. This applies particularly to new members or those with <50 posts.

    Events:

Anyone posting information pertinent to upcoming events should post the details in this thread. The Events thread is for information purposes only, so if you do want to discuss a particular event please do so in a separate thread. If a separate thread for the event in question doesn't exist, please contact a moderator before starting one.

Artists/writer requests and topics related to comic production:

Anyone wanting to discuss comic-making or looking for someone to work with on a project should post in the Comic Production Forum. If you're looking for someone to work with on a commercial project, you can also post on the Adverts.ie Job Adverts forum.

Webcomics, comic shops and resources/useful links:

If you want to share a webcomic link, you should post it in this thread (after first checking whether it's already listed). If you want to post the details of an Irish comic shop or useful/interesting websites, you should post in this thread (after first checking whether the information is already listed).

    Recommended reading:

If you are looking for new reading material, have a look at the current "What are you reading?" thread or check out the "Recommended reading" sticky (forthcoming). If you're still looking for suggestions, post up a new thread including at least 5 titles that will give a good indication of your tastes or what sort of thing you're interested in reading.

Back issues & value of old comics:

If you have any questions about the value or availability of back issues, post in this thread. You can also check sites like Nostomania.com for more information.

    Selling comics:

There are a few points to consider if you are selling comics:
    • Few if any comics from after the 60's are worth a significant amount in the collector/speculator market. Relatively few comics published after the mid-80s will be worth more than a fraction of their cover price. You can check sites like this (free registration required) to get an idea of the value.
    • Only comics in extremely good condition will fetch any significant amount of money in the collector/speculator market. (See here for more info)
    • The options for selling break down broadly as follows:
    |Timescale involved |Level of difficulty |Financial return
    Shops |Days |Simple |Low
Online auctions |Days to weeks |Middling |Low to middling
    Collectors |Weeks/months |Complex |Middling to high
Thus while you can make a reasonable return selling comics, you won't be able to do so quickly or easily. Conversely, you can probably sell a job lot of your comics quite quickly, but usually at a low price.

If you are selling comics on Adverts.ie, you may post a single reply in this thread. The post should list some of the comics you are selling and link to the Adverts.ie thread - all offers/dealing should take place only on the Adverts.ie thread. Please note this thread is only for individuals selling privately - if you are affiliated with or own a comics retail business (whether online or physical) you may not post in this thread.

Alternatives to adverts.ie include eBay and various other online auction or sale sites - if you wish to link to your listings on these or other external sites, you should do so by adding a link to your signature (in keeping with the boards.ie signature rules).

If you are primarily looking to get rid of your comic collection, there are alternative options you can consider. Some charity shops and libraries will accept donations of comics. You can also check sites like FreeCycle to see if anyone local would be interested in taking your collection.
