"Stephen Hawking says we have 100 years to colonize a new planet—or die. Could we do it?" Popular Science, May 4, 2017. Revised from his earlier prediction of 1,000 years. Do such Hawking doomsday prophecies have merit? Or is Hawking's merely selling his new documentary about colonizing Mars?

A new planet wouldn't give us much lebensraum compared to orbital habitats.

Mars is a low energy environment. The best it gets is a dull day here. And dust storms can last ages.

Venus would take too long to terraform. Yes you can live in a high altitude balloon, but mineral resources aren't easy then.

An alternative would be surviving in very deep mines here. Just need to store lots of food. And a few nuclear reactors for power. And mining equipment to get out.

First thought when reading this. The Time Machine (1960). A post-apocalyptic world. Inhabited by humanoid Morlocks living in mines below the surface.

Yes. Matrix (1999) was a post-apocalyptic world. Inhabited by humans surviving in mines. Many controlled by machines harvesting their energy.

I think the only thing that will destroy this planet is humans.

Hawkings theory could be true. So if we inhabit another planet we'll probably ruin that planet too

What about Planet X that's going to collide with earth tomorrow

For humans. Other species may survive and evolve?

Global warming. Another apocalyptic theory. Human species extinction not as likely. Serious consequences for 7 billions probable.
