Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Do you leave the keys in/near the door overnight?

    Quick question, but is debate going on here;

    When going to bed (or coming in from work) do you you lock and leave the keys in or near the door? Or do you bring them to the kitchen, bedroom, wherever, etc.?

    I keep the keys with me, so usually have them on the bedside locker, one of the lads contends that I’m made and would be burned to death in a fire.

    So what do you do?

    Always told to leave the keys downstairs away for where you sleep (eg: in the door/on the stairs). The reason being, if someone breaks in to steal your car, let them have their keys and away with them, rather them needing to "wake you up".

    Never in the door or near the door , to many ****ers around here fishing keys out through the letterbox. Happened to a neighbour of mine a few years back.
    I always have them on locker beside me incase need them in a hurry.

    Keys hanging in a key box at back door

    All our keys are left on the stairs. No letterbox on the door, so not worried about some scoby trying the fish them out.

    Depends on the kind of door lock. If its the kind of lock you cannot open without a key then have a key (additional to the ones on your bunch) permanently beside the door. It can be made 'fishing' proof and should be on some sort of cord or chain to discourage 'borrowing'. Your key beside the bed is no use to anyone else in the house in the event of an emergency.

    In the event of a fire/emergency please make it as easy as possible to get you and your loved ones out.

    Should add here, they’ve specified that if you have a deadbolt door then this situation doesn’t apply - it’s only for when you can’t open the door without a key

    I read somewhere once that a lot of people who die in house fires are found close to the front door, but unable to leave the house because they’ve locked themselves in and had the key too far away from the door. Dunno how true it is, but it makes sense to have them accessible

    My Dad locks the utility door also to, "keep the fúckers out", doesn't accept the potential death trap he has created.

    In the door. Only locked as else one of the cats can get in and leave the door open. one of the joys of living on an offshore island is that no need to lock the only door. Becomes habit though

    The house key is left in the front door, on the inside obviously. If there is a fire in the house you do not need to be locked in.

    Beside the bed. I don't get leaving them near the door in case someone breaks in - you might as well leave the car keys in the car in thay case.

    Likewise. Door is only locked if we're away or last thing at night, when the house keys are on a hook out of sight and car keys in a drawer.

    Thumblock on the front door.

    Keys are always in the back door, only to make it easier to open and close, not for any safety reasons.

    That's great until there's 4 lads standing over you in your bedroom with a kettle of boiling water asking where the car keys are.
