:) Snowy sleet has started falling quite heavily in Ballybofey, and the ground is turning white very quickly. Weathercheck was spot on the button, and I forgot to call into the bookie's !.

looking at the rain/snow charts on one of the links in these treads there looks like a massive clear slot over the east of ireland and into the midlands, its similar over in the uk as well with eastern areas cloud/shower free,.. i have a horrible feeling that all the fun in western parts tracks its way east and then starts to die out over the midlands..hope im wrong but its been clear/cloudless here for past 3 hours.

    Hi All
I am driving to Achill Island tonight (about 17:00ish) any idea of the weather for late late xmas eve way out west?

need to make it there safely

It has been extremely squally here for the past day or two, so take care. It was so windy yesterday morning that an electricity cable on our roof blew apart rendering the entire house live.

Other than that the hills are white, the hailstones are vicious, but no snow at sea level yet.

Really can't see us getting any snow in carlow, the 6 weather just showed the possible odd shower tomorrow evening. Looks like the west and especially the NW will see quite a bit of snow.

RTE1 weather certainly wouldnt give me confidence for snow in Dublin tonight :(

Those are automated stations, they cannot tell the difference between rain and snow.
    Everything to them is rain.

would i be right in thinking that eastern areas have a better chance
of seeing snow becuase the temperatures are dropping lower
and frost is beginning to form? Currently 3.2c and falling
so i reckon it should be cold enough for at least some
of the wet stuff once it reaches here. I wont be happy
until its 1. something though ;)
Oh it will get down to that and lower but you need to have the precipitation and It's not looking like much of it is gonna make its way over to the East.

Showers from that trough falling as rain in cork even with an air temp of two and sleet not snow is now falling at knock airport even though it's well inland and at 650 feet...

  • Registered Users Posts: 12,778 ✭✭✭✭ninebeanrows

A few moderate showers should approach Northern
parts of Dublin in around 2-3 hours and affect
    Meath and Louth too.

Interest is growing on a polar low feature
southwest of Iceland, Latest precipitation models
show some precip moving from west to east
at around 3am int he morning and then it would
seem a prolonged spell of precipitation is likely
tomorrow afternoon, all in all my confidence
for snow in Dublin tonight and tomorrow is
infact higher than ever. I think we'll have
possibly 2cm's by morning and then later
Xmas day things could get alot better :D

Anyway whatever happens its Christmas, Enjoy and
chillax, snow is likely across the entire country be it
a shower or a 10cm dumping, tomorrow evening looks
the best as a bend of heavy precip covers the entire
country in asociation with a possible PL ..
    interesting times ahea :)

Cork reported rain and snow at 730 pm indicating a 100% likelyhood of snow further inland down there
Cork airport is at an altitude though again which distorts the thing a bit

It's getting cloudy in Tallaght now and absolutly freezing. I'm off to the pub now, so hopefully it'll be there to greet me come closing time.

Had very heavy snow for 20 minutes in Abbeyleix, County Laois. The shower gave a light flurry here in Durrow too this evening at 6pm. I see the latest reports on Met.ie show snow in Kilkenny.

    Still rain in Dublin though...
    :o

If there was rain in Dublin i'd be disappointed i really doubt
there is any precip in Dublin at the mo in an hour
it might be different though and its around 1.8c
so i'd expect sleet at worst :)

  • Registered Users Posts: 8,806 ✭✭✭Lafortezza

Slight chance of snow in the next 6 hoursat Dublin Airport. forecasts are giving about 40% likelyhood but that could be just covering bases.
Even if there is snow it's unlikely to stick. Temp is 1.9 degrees.
