Macular Degeneration - detectable by opticians?

    Hi all,

    Just back from a consultant appointment with my Dad. He noticed a blurring of his vision in January. He was slow to go to the optician as he's 87 and was hoping to be vaccinated first, but I told him he should go in case things deteriorated. Things didn't deteriorate, he went to the optician a month ago and they told him he had a cataract and cist and made an appointment with the consultant. A month later, today, the consultant was saying to us we should have been there a hell of a lot sooner, that it's macular degeneration and it's too late to get the vision back, that at most he'll get 30-40% back.

    My question is, do opticians have the tools to detect macular degeneration? Or do you need specialist tools for this?

    Yes optiicians have the machine but could be asked to pay pay extra charge to use it. A good optician will notice the change in vision and request you to go to a specialist
