Applying for Visa with Tax Owed

    Hi Guys,

My partner is looking to activate her 2nd year WHV for australia. Before she does this she is unsure if she should get onto the ATO about tax owed to the ATO.

Basically when she did her 1st year WHV herself and a friend travelled and worked together doing the same jobs. At the end of the trip doing their tax returns her friend was taxed as a resident and received $3k back in tax but my partner was somehow taxed as a non-resident and was subsequently told she owes the ATO $3k

So for right or wrong she owes the ATO $3k in tax (+ whatever the interest rate is)

My question is if anyone knows if this money owed could affect her application for her 2nd year WHV? Should she get onto the ATO first before applying to explain the situation or is there not a link between immigration and the ATO so one shouldn't affect the other?

She does intend to pay back the tax once she's in Australia again by the way.

Cheers for any help with this.

When did she do her 1st visa? Has she been approved for her second one already?

She did her 1st visa in 2012-13.
She hasn't been approved for her 2nd visa yet as she's worried her owing tax may affect her application for the 2nd one ( she's done the farming work. And the same friend of hers has already done her 2nd year visa.)

It most likely won't affect the application.
she'll still owe the tax, maybe with interest.
She could ask for the tax assessment to be check if she was in fact eligible to be a resident
