    Hi all,

Canadian amateur astronomer Steve Mallia got in touch with Dunsink Observatory last April about visiting on an Open Night and some of us met with him during his visit. I've stayed in touch with Steve since then as he has been in Ireland on subsequent business trips.

Steve is back in Ireland next week and will give a talk in Dunsink Observatory on Wednesday, October 14th at 7:30pm about astronomy in Canada. He is on the Council of the Mississauga Center of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada ( http://mississauga.rasc.ca/ ) and also runs an online astronomy store ( http://www.ontariotelescope.com/ )

All are welcome to Steve's talk and admission if free. This is a great opportunity to forge links with international groups and learn about astronomy done elsewhere. I subscribe to the Canadian magazine SkyNews ( http://www.skynews.ca/ ) which is a terrific publication with many articles written by familiar names such as David Levy. The magazine has just been bought out by the RASC themselves.

If the evening is clear then we also plan to use the historic 12-inch Grubb refractor to view some celestial sights. It's just a day after New Moon and there's no bright planet on view but we should be able to pick up some nice colourful double stars and maybe a globular cluster or two (such as M15 in Pegasus).

    Hope to see you there!

    John

    Hi all,

The IFAS Astrophotography exhibition is being held at South County Dublin Library, Tallaght, until July 15th during normal library opening hours. Details at http://www.southdublinlibraries.ie/find-library/county-library-tallaght

I believe 60 of the prints are on display. They were set up last weekend by some of the IAS members.

The exhibition next moves to the Linen Hall Library in Belfast where the exhibition will run from August 2nd to the end of September. Some photos from local amateur astronomers will be added to the display and I think the Irish Astronomical Association will man the exhibition at weekends.

The Botanic Gardens in Dublin said close to 10,000 visitors saw the exhibition over 3 weeks last February. They also added that it was the biggest event they ever held.

    John
