I see you removed the waist line and knee trim.
I'll be keeping the waistline trim anyway.

I bought it without the waist trim, and prefer it that way personally.
They are E21 seats. The interior needs a lot of work as it's unfinished and nothing matches.

Have wanted one of these for over 40 years now !

Remember going to Enniskillen to look at one in TP Toppings.
    Be about 1988 or 89.
You could put your fingers through the sills, it was that rusty...

I'd have to buy fully restored, my skills extend to putting petrol in

I may have been looking at 2002's on various classic sites. Not many around (that aren't for silly money). I really should have bought one 10 years ago

Have you seen this one ?

I'd say mine is worth about 30K :D

Now that would be a good winter project.
Would it be possible to get that on the road again with the paperwork issue?

    Well its been a while,
Been chipping away at it literally.
Removing the sound deadening material and its not a fun job.

Have about 50% done now .
This section took me two hours .

    IMG-20200922-184329.jpg

I started using this locktight SF 7200 gasket remover to remove the residue and its animal stuff.

    IMG-20200922-185222.jpg

I thought I had more pictures but the drivers side front and rear are done now.
Didn't find a huge amount of rust .A hole under the pedals and a small hole on the driveshaft tunnel.

Section the right has been treated with the locktight

    Chip,chip,chip

Its amazing the change a can of primer can make.

    IMG-20200928-191349.jpg

Still so much dynamatt to come off:confused:

  • Registered Users Posts: 2,251 ✭✭✭kdevitt

Thats great progress. Is it factory sound deadening or is it actually dynamat? I've started dailying my own E30 project recently - its a great way to discover all the additional work your car actually needs.

    Its the factory stuff.
Thankfully I haven't found too much extra work.......yet!

Still finding the odd hour or two to go out the car.
its much easier to sit down and watch other people restore cars on youtube!

I need to get all this ****e off the inside before I can move on .

The section at over the driveshaft tunnel took around 1.5 hours to chip off.
    IMG-20201121-WA0011.jpg

Then there is the remains of the glue to deal with.
    IMG-20201121-172534.jpg

But it cleans up nicely and a light coat of primer later.
    IMG-20201121-180842.jpg

Found 3/4 small holes in that floor area,
Should be a much nicer place to work once its cleaned up and primed.
Then I'll get onto the fun (and expensive) parts.

    Bit more done.
Floor pans are quite good thankfully.

    The worst of the floor.

Drivers side floor cleaned and painted up.
Center console out and wiring cleaned up.

    IMG-20201206-125501.jpg

Not much (if any) of that wiring is original. I cant wait to make a new one.
Theres a Slovakian chap on Instagram restoring one almost the same (a tii) and he made this beauty.

    Screenshot-20201207-075616.jpg

Also got these casters that should help with my access.

Not sure I'd trust his wiring. Not even connected to the battery and it's smoking already!

Nice progress. I could do with a new centre console in mine too.
I think there have been three different generations of the dashboard over the life of the 2002. Mine is different to yours.

Wow its been a while since I posted.....
Project has progressed somewhat, lost the last 3 months to a bathroom renovation.

Around christmas I got the dash & windscreen out and the last of the sound deadening material.
As you can see under the dash is like new. One small hole on windscreen frame that was hidden with fillers.
Im a bit further on than these pics show.

    IMG-20201228-WA0028.jpg
    IMG-20201228-WA0030.jpg

Today I had the time to drop and clean the rear subframe.

    IMG-20210404-150009.jpg

    IMG-20210404-153034.jpg

Its in great shape for a 47 year old.

The subfame will be a mini project in itself over the next few months.
Strip it back completely, clean/paint and reassemble.
The price of bushings is making me cry 400e for 12 bushes to do the rear:eek:.

I'll have to disassemble the CVs and grease them.
Might do the seals on the diff, that scares me a little........

Delighted to see an update, subframe came up well with just a wash, hard to believe it's age.

Diff seals are no big deal, especially with it on the floor like yours.

    Wow 2 posts in a week ....
    no stopping me now.
First of the trailing arms stripped and cleaned up.
Managed to find some wheel bearings & bushes local & have the rest on order.
Will report back next week when everything is painted and reassembled .

Easy to get new lines made up. Remove old ones and they'll match them.

Bending and flaring require special tools.

    Thanks Mikehn,

I have managed to get the bearings out of the other trailing arm.
It was looking like an absolute disaster for a while.
the hub would not come off the splined shaft with the hydraulic puller or in the press.
So much force that damage was going to happen but the bearing puller got in the end with a lot of heat from the map gas torch.
the Hub got ever so slightly bent so I will keep an eye out for a new one but it's not a concern for the moment.
also i know a lad with a parts car, unfortunately for me its a touring so the body is very different & extremely rotted.

loads of cleaning to do tomorrow (the easy stuff :D)

As for the brake lines ,no problem buying the tools myself and doing it.
I like to learn and I like to buy tools :o

All lot of people fall down in restoration, by not putting enough detail into making the hard brake lines brackets, bends, routes and material look original factory fitted.

So we’ll worth the effort imho to do it properly yourself. Start by getting the correct pipe.

    Subframe update ,
    remember this crusty thing ?

    Subframe1.jpg

    Is now this

    Subframe2.jpg

    Bearings, boots & bushes done.
Just the brake lines left to do, just waiting on a small pipe bender to come.
Going to run with the diff the way it is is for the moment.

Over a year now since I started , where has that gone....
Not a massive amount done since the last update .
waiting on a few bits to come + an engine stand.

Cleaned up the prop shaft, shocks and springs.

    Prop in progress
    IMG-20210429-191040.jpg

Before & after on the springs

    IMG-20210508-094756.jpg
    IMG-20210508-115531.jpg

I did take the drivers wing off for a look,
Wing is in like new condition , few bits of rust towards the front around an old repair.

    IMG-20210508-131504.jpg

The black looking metal is a repair patch.
    Easy enough fix I think.

    IMG-20210508-131523.jpg

going to start looking at removing the gear box next.
