    Hi All,

Unfortunately my Davis Anemometer has died. It's the bog-standard cabled version.

Anyone recommend a good place to purchase a replacement?

    Warmest Regards,
    Danno.

Thanks for that RobertKK, you know I might just relocate my Anemometer to a better location and the transmitter looks the best option for me.

    Might also find these useful.

'Scaled Instruments' is a pretty decent online shop for DV2 parts, and generally offer good value for money.

I know Villian got his Davis station from this company in Germany.

    Back up and running.

Discovered it was actually a broken cable all along, but hey - it's a new anemometer anyways!

Well done Danno. Hoping to get a transmitter shortly and relocate the anemometer away from the main station so as to get cleaner air. Need to do a bit of maintenance on the anemometer also as the direction is sticking now and again, been working fine since Storm Hannah sorted it out though !

I am thinking about getting a basic weather station. How do you install the anemometer high enough for clean air but allow access to replace the batteries?

Not sure. As far as I know a lot of the basic stations dont allow you to separate the anemometers, usually they come as one unit. Normally air temperature is measured at 2m at above the ground and winds at 10m so bit of a tradeoff on how to site your station. Some useful info in the thread below.

I think the best way around the battery problem is solder a lead onto the battery contacts & have a battery box at ground level.

Any recommendations for a good outdoor robust weather station to use with a laptop et?

Only ever had a Davis which has held up fairly well here in Kerry over a number of years although did need to get a new Temp / humidity sensor and needed to calibrate the rain sensor.

I think most would say that the least expensive stations can give a lot of trouble but then the likes of Davis can go wrong also and the parts are expensive.

There is a fair bit of discussion on this thread https://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057106322 , worth a read through and you can weigh up cost and reliability etc.

Relocated my anemometer this evening for cleaner air and to get it at 10m height .

Using a newly purchased Davis transmitter now and all going well so far.

Davis Vantage Vue or Pro. They are expensive but last years.
    Cheaper in the states.

Savage! How high above the apex is it?

In the last 6 months I've replaced all three sensors here, the rainfall just this week.

Not bad for 11 years old.

This weekend I'm replacing all the cabling with proper outdoor stuff (thanks Eircom). Hopefully it will result in virtually no downtime in data.

Get a Davis Vantage Pro II.
The scaled instruments site linked above are sound to deal with. Perhaps use address pal to save on shipping costs.
I'd then purchase a 64gb Windows ten TV box and use that to install Cumulus software to manage your data. Cheapest running costs in the long run.
It sounds daunting to begin, but a good days effort in sitting and setting up should see you good for ten years.

    2.7m / 9 ft above the ridge.

Actually measured the overall height this evening only to find out that it is 8.22m / 27 ft , my pole is a bit short

Easy enough to remedy some day.

Nothing a bit of welding wouldn't sort out! :D

Got my own station sorted out today. Replaced the original rainfall tipping buckets with the newer one: https://www.scaledinstruments.com/shop/davis-instruments/parts/vantage-pro2-parts/rain-collector-parts/davis-7345-147-single-spoon-tipping-bucket-rain-collector-assembly-0-2-mm-metric/

Also put in heavy duty outdoor eircom cable between the wind vane and the rainfall collector and the integrated sensor suite. Was surprised how "rotten" the old indoor cable that I previously used was despite it being in wavin ducting.

Hopefully no more parts will fail going forward for a while at least!
