Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Reversing camera recommendation - caravan

    Just got a caravan. Most definitely need a reserving camera. Has anyone got a personal recommendation for a good one thanks

    Just Google wireless reversing camera kits and you'll find loads of options

    I'm also in the market for one. I have a Nissan x-trail and rather than another screen/phone display I'm going to investigate if I can rig in one of them to a switch on the Center screen to switch between normal rear camera and a new wireless one.

    Has anyone had success with something like that?

    There are as many reversing camera systems as I've had hot dinners. The choice is really down to budget. there are cheapies out there but quality usually costs. Technology wise they are all the same it's just that cheap systems probably use cheap components and expensive systems use quality components.

    Wired systems are generally better than wireless which have been reported to display unwanted video from other nearby cameras.
    With a caravan, you're stuck with wireless unless you insert a waterproof connector at the hitch. if that is a practical thing to do.

    The hot dinner situation is the very reason we chase a recommendation.

    Do you have a ANY camera installed? if so would you recommend it?
    if not, have you tried any specific one that you do NOT recommend?

    I don't have a camera, although one has been on my shopping list for 15 years but it has never risen to the top. I learned to drive and reverse before they were invented so other more important (to me) 'stuff' always took my money and time.
    If I was to purchase I'd just go for a decent quality one at a decent price point.
    In my opinion, like so many electronics, reversing camera systems start as generic products from some factory in China and get a brand name specific to the seller printed/stamped on after production.
    Example: many TV sets are from the same factory with just a brand name added later.

    As regards your own requirement, if you don't want to install it yourself just go to a reputable specialist, if it's a DIY job just buy a system which is at the top end of your budget.

    The only systems I've heard not recommended are wireless because they have been known to pick up 'stray' signals (pictures) but perhaps that's only a problem with systems at the cheaper end of the market.

    I have installed some...they are quite clever. They also act as front facing recorders, GPS and security systems (that can send interior video to your phone) these days as well as media centres.
    I'd go wired, they're more reliable.


    Ease of install is one day the performance of the hardware is the device's lifetime.

    There are new units available that make the caravan invisible, Valeo make one called X-travue and it uses software to link up the camera so you can see through the caravan.
