Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

    It's just a 'fair weather' radar. Worked great all March, April and May. First day of heavy showers and thunderstorms, it dies.

    Usually displays the radius of coverage when operating. Not saying it was working perfectly all the time it was certainly up and running over the past months.

    Unusually for our climate the sferics are providing a partial proxy for precipitation and they extend beyond the Shannon radar zone but are still no substitute for actual radar.

    Somebody on Twitter was saying there is a leak in the roof where the weather computers are stored.Hopefully it will be repaired soon

    Well, that's reassuring to hear. A few slates, tiles, a roll of felt or whatever, will be a lot cheaper to fix the hole in the roof than having the radar overhauled yet again.

    It's actually the backup system for detecting rainfall.

    There's plenty showing on the composite radar including the UK's.

    No, but when you only have 2 radars and both are the other side of the mountains from you they won't pick up this low-based precipitation.

    Still having just the two systems will still not fix the blind spots in the southeast, far southwest and far northwest (which is also a problem for the Belfast radar). I would like to have seen another one going in somewhere like SW Donegal or Donegal airport.

    At least one more radar site is desirable. We have just returned to west Waterford from the north Mayo coast and there are problems with coverage in both areas!
