They've played with the format a bit and reduced it to a single table, with one match a day. Everything up until the final is best of 11 with the final best of 19.
I think this diminishes the chances of John Higgins and Selby and plays right into Judd's hands.
Should be a great indicator of form ahead the Crucible, but on the other hand it will still be 5 weeks with no tournament until then.
No Ronnie, but I'm sure he's putting in 8 hours a day to get ready for Sheffield instead

Pity it will be such a gap to the world championship. I always feel snooker misses out by having its biggest tournament at the end of the season. Lots of people follow the world championship and then there's no decent snooker for months.

Same with this. They could build on the momentum from the championship league and lead into the world championship, but the gap will kill that.

I'm always glad of the break after the WC. Dunno if I could watch another tournament for a good while.

That's probably true of the diehard fans. But if they want to broaden the fan base, the gap is a real killer. It's the only time of year that my mates will ask if I'm watching the snooker, unprompted.

    Why isn't Ronnie playing?

So his tasche was modeled on Willie Thornes.

Ronnie's ronnie made me think of The Thick Of It line about looking like a disgraced geography teacher.

The Thick of It is some show. Annoyed I don't remember that quote.

It makes sense to wrap the season up after the biggest show in town. Like the All Ireland finals in football and hurling or the Champions League final.

The Crucible is a slog for the players. And for the fans too. It's wall to wall coverage for over two weeks and for those of us who watch just about every session the break after it's over is much needed.

Big fan of thrt show too!

It was a Hugh Abbott quote so season.1 or 2. The actor was then found in possession of child porn and is now a disgraced former actor!

Hugh Abbott was the unheralded star of that show for me, long as he lasted, that is! Malcolm had a grudging respect for Hugh that he could never have for his omnishambolic successor. Slippery Hugh, as he called him, half admiringly.

I did not know that! So that's why he vanished off the show.

The spin off film they made, In The Loop, was quality as well.

4 centuries in 4 frames from Maguire. Made it look easy.

  • Registered Users Posts: 19,906 ✭✭✭✭El_Duderino 09

Just catching up on the first match now and it's such a high quality. So few missed pots and the positional play is so much higher than the as tournament. It a really great quality snooker between two top pros.

Maguire's positional play is better than anything last week. He's been very good

Selby - Yan looks like it could be a last frame job the way it is going 3-3.The commentators are going on about Selby being a grinder. Ebdon MkII is always how I think of him.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

But you're not shouting "JUST ****ING HIT IT" at the TV, as much anyway.

    Ebdon was unwatchable.

Ken seemed to think that black by Selby was a fluke. When he went 7-5 up. I thought selby played it? A cocked hat double?

99% that's a fluke. Maybe selby could claim he played it, but he's playing 4 cushions to leave black on the top rail. Shouldn't really have been going towards the pocket, much more likely to have stuck it for opponent. Got lucky.

Interesting incident there. Referee drops the yellow while respotting it, it shoots across the table and somehow doesn’t hit a single ball, very lucky.

Interesting that, despite not having been respotted yet, if Murphy had caught the yellow and prevented what would have been a complete mess, it would have been a foul against him for touching a ball with his hand.

Sounds gas. Snooker has to be up there with golf for it's rules and rule usage.

Was watching it. Dont think Murphy would have forfeited 4 points if he stopped the yellow crashing into the reds as the referee was just respotting the yellow but i could be wrong. If Murphy was penalised for that maybe Allen would have given him back the four points by fouling on purpose. Anyway the referee eventually stopped this conundrum from happening.

Interesting scenario. I wouldn't have thought it would have been a foul against murphy on basis ball hadnt been respotted and thus wasnt in play. Not 100%, but not aware of any specific rule to the contrary.

I don’t know myself either. But the commentators seemed so suggest it would be a foul. Also you could hear Murphy ask the ref as the ball was travelling, “Can I touch this?”, to which I thought I heard the ref say no.

I'm always happy to go with Jan Verhaas in these situations. Referees have discretion to apply common sense when it comes to the rules and i think this is a perfect case.

6 centuries by one player in a best of 17 match, never before achieved (according to Phil Yates), and it’s just happened for the second time in 3 days.

  • Registered Users Posts: 13,023 ✭✭✭✭Joe_ Public

Might need 7 centuries to win it!

  • Registered Users Posts: 3,534 ✭✭✭Chalk McHugh

6 centuries in a best of 17 and looks like the Magician is going home empty handed. That Allen fluke was outrageous all the same. Murphy never got a sniff in the decider and will be sick. Good match.

This 9 ball stuff is kind of tiresome.
