Hi all,
Vanilla are planning an update to the site on April 24th (next Wednesday). It is a major PHP8 update which is expected to boost performance across the site. The site will be down from 7pm and it is expected to take about an hour to complete. We appreciate your patience during the update.

Dog Crate.

    Has anyone got any recommendations on a good dog crate, must have a inner divider. Any ones I have seen online do not have the inner wall to move as the puppy grows....and I dont want to have to by 3 crates in the first year as they grow so fast.

    I have spent a good while looking and seem

    Dont mind it being on the pricey side if its a good one. It will be for a German Sheperd puppy @ 8 weeks old.

    https://jebbtools.ie/collections/dog-crates for the crate and diy the divider - eg some cable ties and cardboad/plywood/trellis panels from deals/ask on your local FB if anyone has wire left from a roll etc etc.

    Was thinking about that myself as there are so many crates just none with dividers. Also dont want the pup chewing on the cable ties or the like....but thanks for the link to that website.

    Having had GSD's for close to 30 years I've always found them to be exceptionally clean and don't think a divider is necessary.I've certainly never used one and crate train all my dogs. Best of luck with your new puppy, the breed is one in a million and I adore them

    As per the above most of the working dog breeds like GSD, Border collies etc. are very clean animals and pick up the basics about the toilet incredibly quickly .

    Our last border collie never had to be toilet trained for the house , we rescued her as a 6 week old pup who was dumped . We brought her out to the garden for plenty of trips during the day on her first day and she got used to going to the toilet out there .

    There are some on amazon e.g. was thinking of getting one for our new puppy. "Savic crate with divider" will give you a couple of options for a reasonable price. You can also get dividers separately. Just make sure they are the correct size. All the best with the new GSD. Great dogs.

    Didn't bother with my Shih Tzu either. He had a crate, but that was more for his 'quiet' area. Just kept putting him out after eating, sleeping, playing, and encouraging him with loads of clapping, praise, and excitement when he did what he was supposed to do, where he was supposed to do it. He was more or less dry within 3 weeks. Any accidents, we simply cleaned without comment.

    Just stock up on the Trigene! :D

    Thanx for all the replies....what is Trigene? Some sort of bleech like dettol that kills 99.99999999999999999999% of everything....lol.

    When our lady was small she slept in her basket in the crate, as she would have been lost in it. She's filling the whole crate now end to end!

    I got a full sized crate and just put a big cardboard box inside it which blocked off about half of it when she was really tiny - obviously any sustained biting attack on the box would have wrecked it but IMO you don't leave a distressed pup in a crate for long anyway, so that just never happened. She didn't pay any attention to the box it was just like the side of her crate to her I think. Or maybe we were lucky.

    Then I put a dog cushion inside the rest of the crate space, one of those dog basket shaped ones, so she had a lovely cosy space inside the crate to snuggle down into. Sort of breaking down the space inside the crate to make it more her size.

    Yeah I think I will buy the full size crate for when he is fully grown and size it with a bread board I can get, cheers for all the replies.

    We got a Border Collie pup at 8 weeks old. He is 12 weeks now and other than the first day when he had accident he has gone outside .I wasn't keen on a crate but everyone seemed to recommend this. Apart from the first night when he was unsettled he has gone in every night and is very comfortable in it.

    Lots of time spent interacting is paying off and he is so clever and is a joy but time consuming. Great temperment, full of energy and has really bonded with all the family..

    Borders are known as one of the most intelligent breeds along with GSD and Poodles. My friend at home has always had them and has two (soon to be 3) now. They are amazing, but you have to keep them busy otherwise they'll make their own entertainment! :pac:

    Maybe, when he's a little older try him with a scent or agility class? They're great and the dogs love it!

    Contact the breed club for Borders on the IKC - they should be able to point you in the right direction.

    Have you really never watched the agility on Crufts? Search for agility on YouTube for some great videos. Agility is fantastic and probably more natural for a BC than scent work. Look up fly ball as well for another option.

    These are dog sports by the way. They require a lot of training in the beginning but its great fun.

    I think there are probably a few fly ball clubs if your near Dublin or Belfast. There's nothing at all where I am. Not even a dog park.

    Well just a quick up date, I went and got the Savic Giant Dog Crate (recommended for adult GSD). I rang Petstop in Blanchardstown as it said they are the stockist for them. Just so happens they only had one left without the box and I got it for €75...RESULT.

    So I ordered a savic divider from the UK for 20 sterling so I am still quids in and have the puppy sorted from 8 weeks up.

    Thanx for all the replies and info, next thing is to find socialisation classes amongst all this covid madness.
