    Hi All
Anyone know of a registry of medical doctors in Ireland circa 1850.

The place I usually go to is the Roll of Licentiates at the RCSI website.

However, they seem to have moved or removed them from the site as I can't find sight nor sound of them.

You could try emailing their heritage officer who I've always found brilliant to deal with.

    Hi Hermy
Thank you for this. I will give them a try.

I saved the pdf's of the Rolls - if you'd like me to look up a name just ask.

Another place that might mention doctors is trade Directories like Thom's.
You'll find some of them on Ancestry and elsewhere online.

    Hi Hermy.
    Thanks.
    DR Nicholas Mullen
    Dundalk County Louth
    1855 to 1890.

    1855 to 1890.

Are those the years he was practising or the years of his birth and death?

I've searched from 1844 to 1860 and not a mention.

    What year was he born?

    Born 1832 in ballinlough Louth
    Died 1893 in ballinlough Louth.
On birth certs for his children he is down as a farmer.
My cousins in Australia reckon he was a doctor.
I have my doubts but I do not want to burst their bubble without checking!!!

If he was doctor I'd be surprised he'd fail to mention it where he could.

Death cert is also farmer - it would be astoundingly unlikely that it wouldn't be mentioned, also its not really a doctors death (bronchitis from TB). (edit: not implying anything bad with a TB death, it was a part of life back then and for some decades more and I've it plenty of times in my tree - it just wasn't that common in the very small 'professional classes')

You're sure you've the right man, though, I presume?

Yes the correct man. I am satisfied the Australians are mistaken.
They will have to settle for a small Irish farmer as their ancestor.
    Thanks for checking though.

Just checked the newspaper archives, there is a list of deceased for the time he died in evening herald, he is listed as Mr Nicholas Mullen, Ballinlough, and 2 names above him there is a doctor listed, so looks like he was not a dr

There is a medical directory on FindMyPast, afaik.

The RCPI archivist, Harriet Wheelock, is very approachable.
