A single (or many) video of a bus crashing doesn't mean buses crash regularly. I don't see anyone dismembered in the bus crash.

Over a period of 16 years, a total of 21 bus passengers died. Compare that to thousand of car passengers.

Year Killed Serious Injury Minor Injury Total Note
    1998 6 13 125 144

So now you've moved from :

    Nothing will happen you :

If a 1 tonne car hits a stationery 1 tonne car, the moving car will likely come to an abrupt halt.

If a 20 tonne bus hits a stationery 1 tonne car, the bus will likely come to a halt much more slowly, thereby subjecting the occupants to less deceleration and less likely to be injured.

    Doesn't happen often :

Buses and trains are 10-100 times safer than car travel.

City buses are restricted to 65km/h. They don't need seat belts as the stopping behaviour of a 20-tonne bus is a lot different to a 1-tonne car.

Yeah but they are smelly. :D

I flipped my car into a ditch a few years back. Landed on my roof and ended up about 30-40 meters into the field upside down.
When the car came to a stop i was hanging by the belt upside down.
Combination of driving a little too fast for the road conditions (but within the speed limit for the road!) and hitting a gravel patch on a bend.

I cant image how ****ed id be if i wasnt wearing a seat belt. I would have come down on my head very hard and probably broken quite a few bones including my neck.

Instead i walked away with minor cuts on my knuckles from where my hands had hit the roof of the car.

I always thought it was a boobs thing.

I think for most women the issue with seatbelts IS a boobs thing, not that most women use it as a reason not to wear them. It just makes them very uncomfortable as the belts are not designed for women and even with adjusting the height of it, it ends up with the belt dragging up the side of your neck. Not so bad for short little trips, but very aggravating on longer trips.

It appears something like this is supposed to help.

Actually, that video posted earlier with Nell McCafferty shows the exact problem.

When all else fails roll out the stats eh? Completely unrelated to your "the bus decelerates differently to a car" comment.

Just on that link surely lowering the seatbelt would help a lot. Obviously for pendulous boobs there's less way to get comfortable but with a bra most women should be able to get it between.

My ex girlfriend would always wear her seatbelt like this. It used to cause a lot of arguments. Eventually should started wearing it correctly...while in my car anyway!
