    Should be RIP big un.

Burmese mountain dogs are the size of small horses. I suspect that if the dog was standing, she would have been taller than Pres Higgins himself. - and that is no exaggeration.

Did they actually inform the media about this? How else would they know? Being informed of the death of one of the leader's pets is seriously dystopian...

The President put a small note about it at the end of his most recent Newsletter. The dog passed away a few months ago. It then got out to media. Anyone who subscribes to the newsletters are more than likely aware of the dogs and their role and would want to know this news.

I don't agree. This dog was defacto an officer of this State. Every person who visited the Aras and happened upon Sioda left that place with a pep in their step. This dog always saw the best in people and I think that is symbolic of the presidency of Michael D. To have courage, strength, and humility. This is a man with a strong social conscience and a deep seated humanity; and Sioda reflected that back.

This dog was very kind to my daughter when I was last in the Aras, if you happened to meet Sioda you were left with a feeling to be the person this dog thought you were. Sioda was an important part of the team and an important part of this presidency.

If that was the case he would not be friends with President Ortega of Nicaragua, even before the 2018 Presidential elections he had pictures of himself with this man on the official site for the Irish president, despite President Ortega running death squads. He has never spoken out against his friend, very close as he had Ortega visit his home in the past, and spoke of wanting to visit him as president of Ireland.
Did the dog reflect this too?

I don't mind them but I'm always suspicious of people that animals don't like.

Sad that the dog died. I don't think it's necessary to honeycoat the news by saying it 'passed away'.

Sad day for anyone, losing a dog. Only a certain cohort would understand how heartbreaking it is.

As Mark Twain said, "a dog's life is too short... His only fault really". :(

Edit actually it was Sligh Turnbull. But MT had a good one too! :)

Ah yes Mark Twain's was "entry to heaven must go by favour. If it went by merit, you would stay outside and your dog would go in". Also quite apt at this time I suppose! :)

Its Bród I feel sorry for.

An adult understands death and will grieve anyway. A child may not understand death but will feel the loss and come to understand one day. Bród had his other half, his companion in their big busy world, with all the fun they had and now all he knows is that he cannot find her. I've seen it before when long time companion dogs lose one animal, their little hearts break :(

Funny how joking was allowed on the thread I posted about 2000 pigs crammed on top of each other indoors and burning to death a couple of weeks ago on this very island. People have no problem contributing to the horrific treatment of factory farmed pigs and are suddenly animal lovers. I know we've a different relationship with different animals but at least check where your food comes from and don't contribute to the suffering.

I didnt read about that here, but I read an article on it somewhere else. The article focused on the monetary loss to the business owner, without any mention of the suffering of the animals.

I can only imagine the comments here. It is not to be unexpected though and would not be surprised.

Aye, I heard he used the dog to evict the students from the gaff he flogged last year (and nicely got a tax break on it).

Still, those landlords eh? Damn capitalists.

It is sad for the Higgins household, but it shouldn't be national news.

Suppose what your definition of perspective is though.

Sioda played an Ambassadorial role in the Aras and would be recognised throughout the world by many people in a positive way.

So there are many many people who would be interested in this as a very newsworthy topic.

I'd give you a hundred quid if you could pick that dog (pre-death) from a canine line-up.

She wasn't exactly up there with Bono and Liam Neeson, in the Irish famous abroad category.

Lol, sure I am. It's sad for the owners I'm sure, I had it happen to me when I was a kid. But it's a laugh to elevate the dog's status to that of international fame. Funny how this is newsworthy and plenty of other things about the Aras aren't. I guess the media knows best what to report on, and what to avoid.

This thread is illuminating, I must say. The doggy craze in this country is out of control; anthropomorphism and fake emotion.
Maybe there should be a statue of the dog? Given the esteem it seems to have been held in. It's the kind of thing that dictators do. Michael D. the socialist landlord would definitely go along with that. A giant statue of his dog, or a mausoleum. Kim Jong Un style.
It's easy to see how dictators get away with their shyte for so long. The forelock tuggers love it.
    Caligula would blush :D
