Maybe they should enforce the AirBnB regulations and give planning permission for additional hotel rooms.

Banning Airbnb is a quick win. It pleases a lot of people who lack even the most basic understanding of economics. Do you really want to know what solves the shortage of housing in Dublin?

Banning Airbnb isn't just about increasing housing stock. It's about people in residential buildings and high density population areas being entitled to peaceful living. And, yes, people can have disruptive long-term tenants as neighbours. That's also a problem that doesn't take from the disruption Airbnb lets can cause.

As said, regulate Airbnb and give planning permission for more hotel rooms. Sorted.

If you want to talk about hotel rooms, lets talk about hotel rooms. DCC is trying to block a brand new 365 room hotel off Middle Abbey St...

Another 263 hotel room application was rejected last October...

None of which is the least bit relevant. There is no 'but hotel prices are high' exemption in the planning legislation.

It is a quick win, agreed,

Here's a basic understanding of economics. Removing thousands of residential properties from a supply constrained market drives residential property prices up.
I can't wait for Airbnb ban to be effective, as it won't be effective. In about 2/3 months people will realise that there is still a massive shortage of hotel rooms. Sure DCC and planners are not allowing it and no cares as they were fixated on Airbnb.

Another poster mentioned some sort of enforcement notice on a Temple Bar property earlier today.

I don't recall any mention that the enforcement only applied to AirBnB.

It'll probably be targeted at Air bnb considering that is how its been portrayed by the meda plus some councillors.

It's the obvious place to start considering AirBnB makes up pretty much the entire 'home-sharing' market at the moment.

I guess my point is, moving to a different platform isn't looking like the silver bullet some posters think it's going to be.

Enforcing planning regulations is quite different from an 'AirBnB ban'.

Just got wind of these new rules today. Are they now law? We rent a property out during summer but it's on the coast in west of Ireland. Do the rules just apply to areas under pressure with housing shortage.

The law hasn't really changed, local authorities have just been given guidelines (and clarification) to enforce the existing laws.

Part of the guidelines is to concentrate efforts where residential accommodation is in short supply.

Have a read of the guidelines that have been issued (link in post #2)
